I am guessing with the right combination of say vinegar and bicarbonate you could get the same effect BUT these are easy to use and work really well, the stains just lift and float off after a few hours of soaking. Keeps my thermo cup, that I use daily for tea, like new inside. I've tried cheaper ones too (that had an odd, mint aftertaste and smell) and I've gone back to these because they work better and there's no aftertaste or smell at all.

I was somewhat skeptical when I tried these tablets, but I'm now a total believer. I make coffee in a stovetop espresso pot every day, and pour the finished coffee into a 1-pint stainless steel thermos to keep it until I'm ready to use it. The strong coffee can sit in the thermos for at least 24 hours, and the staining and crusting inside the bottle builds up. I tried bleach ...no real effect. I was unable to scrape at the buildup due to the small size of the opening and the narrow space inside the bottle. I looked in at it with a torch, and was appalled at the state of the crusted residue in the bottle. Plus there was that constant smell of stale coffee. I divided one of these tablets in half (around a half litre of water would suffice), put it inside the thermos, topped up with boiling water from the kettle, and left it to do its thing for 18 hours. When I poured the stuff out, the interior was absolutely spotless. (Again, I checked it using my torch.) Furthermore the smell of stale coffee was completely gone. This is like a brand-new thermos now. Caution: the stuff does bubble up when the water gets added, so I don't recommend tightly fixing a lid to the bottle while the stuff 'works.' I just loosely put the top on the bottle, to let gas/air escape. There was no problem at all. I'm going to soak the stainless steel coffee pot next, and see how that works. Very impressed. This really does the job.

My ember mug built up tea stains for around 6 months before I decided it really needs a clean! I tried a lot of general cleaning methods with no luck and a lot of harsher solutions would damage the mug. Decided to try this due to previous reviews. I popped one in with hot water and left it overnight. The next morning I couldn’t believe it - the stains just simply wiped off! It was like I had a brand new day one ember mug! I will be using these in the future for sure! Anyone who has an ember mug and is worried about it damaging it but wants a clean/brand new ember mug feeling, USE THESE TABLETS! Pro tip: it can fizz a bit when you pop the tablet in hot water so don’t fill it to the brim of the mug.

It's an amazing product. I put some boiling water from kettle an I left it about 2 hours. I have this coffee thermos and I have been using it for more than a year now, and imagine how much stain was inside. Because the coffee I used was Lavazza and it's a very strong coffee. Now my thermos looks brand new. 💯% worth it.

My travel mug has been stained brown for the longest time no matter how many times I wash it or scrub it I couldn’t get the stains out and just assumed that it will always be brown or I will have to buy a new one. I got these tablets and OH MY GOD it has worked so well that my travel mug looks brand new! Got my very strained thermos totally clean. Had to leave it to soak overnight as it was very tea stained but sparkly clean in the morning. No aftertaste from the tablet.
