Where does the lather come from if it contains no soap?

Soap is made from fat via saponification using lye(sodium hydroxide) to strip the fatty acids off of glycerol(or glycerin, same thing).

The fatty acids stripped from the fat form micelles, which are these tiny small little balls where the non polar fatty bits of the fatty acid hold onto the non polar oily junk on the inside of the ball and the outside of the ball is the polar acid part of the fatty acid that can hold onto the water. This is how grease is washed off. It also relates to how the big bubbles we see are made.

What you will find in any cleaner that foams/lathers, it does something exactly like this to form micelles. These are surfactants. They lower the surface tension of the water allowing bubbles to form and stay(more stable). If you look at any of these products you will find a surfactant listed with some long chain like a fatty acid and some polar end capable of holding onto water. Often, it’s name starts with sodium, and has some name after that ending in “are”, but not always. It could be lithium, or a nonmetal cation like ammonium. It could also be an anion, like phosphate, with a cation surfactant.

Here, it does say sodium in front, so it’s easy to spot in the list of ingredients : Sodium Lauroamphoacetate. If you look at the structure of this chemical, long non polar part, and a polar part on the end. Look it up, it’s a surfactant. That is how this product lathers, but does not have soap. It uses a surfactant that is not a fatty acid. It’s technically not soap, but works the same way to remove grime, and it lathers up.

I use and recommend this product. People with some skin disorders, like me, will find the fatty acid based cleaners(soap) to upset their skin more. There are other non-soap body washes,  most are, but I’ve not found any better than this for my condition. Very high quality product. Worth every penny. It is very gentle, and it cleans.
