MERCURY MITTS

Amazing warm mitts, great quality. I've bought so many cheap gloves in the past which simply don't perform very well. Not tested out how waterproof they are, but 5 stars for warmth.

These are very warm gloves. My hands get very cold when skiing so I wanted to get some gloves to prevent that. I tried many other brands but these mitts work the best. Still, after a few hours in very cold climates, my fingers will start to get cold. But it’s a much better improvement over other brands. If you use glove warmers, then this will not be an issue.

The best, warmest gloves I've ever owned! I purchased these to attend to the coldest football game I've ever been to. And my hands stayed warm the entire time! Highly recommend!

I needed new shells for my layered ski mitt system. I thought these were going to be perfect, but I went with a different manufacturer. There’s nothing wrong with these, but it was mostly price and personal preference that moved me away from them.

I live in Chicago and was looking for a mitt capable of keeping my hands warm when temperatures drop below freezing. Several reviews rated the BD Mercury mitts highly with many commenting on how warm they are especially in colder temperatures. Unfortunately I did not share that experience although I do agree these mitts are well designed, are comfortable and use high quality material. I currently own a pair of Outdoor Research Meteor mitts which have thinner lining and found no difference between the 2 mitts when walking outside in -4 F conditions. Both performed poorly. I felt my hand getting cold in the Mercury a few minutes before the Meteor was impacted. I think the BD Mercury will be fine in anything above 25-30 F but below that it struggles to stay warm fairly quickly. I also wore inside, in a 55 F heated garage, to see how long it would take before these mitts became uncomfortably warm. For me that was about 15 minutes. So I think these mitts have a fairly specific temperature range where they perform best. Unlike down, which is more forgiving with wide temperature fluctuations, the synthetic insulation and liners on these gloves doesn't really do that. Another quibble is with the wrist elastic which is very tight. I sized up to an XL to get the widest opening but even then these mitts require a good tug to get on. I understand why BD did that to keep water/snow out but that makes this mitt somewhat uncomfortable to wear if you have a normal to large wrist. In the end I returned these and purchased a pair of Mountain Hardware Extreme mitts. They are down filled, are much warmer but cost $100 more than the Mercury's. They'll also be useless if the down ever gets wet unless I use a waterproof outer lining. Life is a set of compromises and I have yet to find the perfect glove which is a very subjective and personal thing and will differ by person. For me, the Mercury's are good but not great.
