Q: how much weight can it support? If used for a 12 pound bulletin board - will it work?

I would think that may be a little much. I would not go over 5 pounds.

Q: Can it be used with a simple poster and not a board? If so, how does it hold the poster? Can the clips hold only paper? Thanks!

It needs to be a little thicker than a poster board and it adjusts up and down so it can be big or small. It also has a lip that holds it in place. I love it.

Q: Can this stand handle at sign that is 36x48?

The suitable graphic size says 33"W X 75" H.

Q: Can it hold a flexible banner or does it have to be stiff?

I would imagine that a banner with a rigid edge like a rod or a dowel could be attached to the top frame of the stand using binder clips or such.
