Good book quality, a must-buy for Batman and Joker fans!!!

The joker is far more menacing in this than many later appearances and you just have to love that.
It's short. About a quarter of the book is taken up by a second unrelated story by the same writer. That doesn't in anyway reduce the impact of the story or the characters. The joker is far more menacing in this than many later appearances and you just have to love that.

First the introduction of Joker and second a detective team up. I enjoyed both.
Batman The Man Who Laughs contains 2 stories, first The Man Who Laughs and another called Made of Wood. While I'm no expert on comics and most of my experience is from Marvel I really have grown more partial to Batman and am still new with only Batman Year One, The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, Hush, The Dark Knight Returns, A Death In The Family, and now The Man Who Laughs, so take my opinions as you will. The Man Who Laughs is a one shot written by Ed Brubaker, artwork from Doug Mahnke and colours by David Baron. Released in 2005 this story introduces the Joker following Frank Miller's Batman Year One. It's an interesting story because at this point Batman has never encountered anything like the Joker and the impact a single criminal can have on Gotham. The artwork was great and at times can be disturbing complementing the laughing gas to make you visually as well as mentally uncomfortable with the thought of something so terrible. Overall it was a great story, I feel it was an appropriate introduction into the Joker and left me wanting more and luckily, there a lot of Joker to be read. Next up is Made of Wood is a 3 issue story (Detective Comics #784-786) from 2003 written by Ed Brubaker, art from Patrick Zircher, and colours from Aaron Sowd (parts 1-3) and Steve Bird (part 3). This is a decent detective issue, I think I preferred the artwork in this issue. In these 3 parts the re-emergence of a killer is made after several decades of absence. The case was never solved and now Batman and Green Lantern team up to attempt to solve this case that Lantern couldn't solve and haunts him. I will say I do think the 3rd part is kind of short compared to the previous 2 but still good. Overall a nice one to have, and an easy recommendation to anyone who has already read Year One. The introduction of the Joker in the first story and a Batman Green Lantern team up being detectives in the second. Both have appealing artwork with decent stories and well worth picking up, maybe not as iconic or as essential in my opinion as A Death In The Family but worth a read. Hopefully you found this review helpful and happy reading.

Two amazing stories showcasing the talent of Ed Brubaker
When I got this, I've read lots of reviews and articles talking about how the story Batman: The Man Who Laughs is one of the greatest Batman (and Joker) stories ever told. I was also aware that this book also collected the other story Made of Wood featuring a Batman/Green Lantern (Alan Scott) team-up, but assumed that it would just be an OK story. However, after finishing the entire book today, I found that Made of Wood in fact overshadows The Man Who Laughs as a better story! The book was probably not marketed as such due to the fear of people not wanting to read about the 1940s Green Lantern (and who am I kidding? The Joker sells!), but trust Ed Brubaker as he creates a central heart to the story showing a unique dynamic between Batman and Alan Scott Green Lantern that is not found between Batman and another character. I agree with other reviewers that Made of Wood is just another detective murder story, but the characters featured in it, including Jim Gordon are what make this story stand-out! As for the main feature of the book The Man Who Laughs, well I can see that it does deserve to be called one of the best Batman/Joker stories. It tackles The Joker's first attack on Gotham, and what an attack it was! The story also highlights Batman, 'Captain' Jim Gordon, and their relationship with each other (as Made of Wood also does). It also adds on the bases formed by Alan Moore's origin story for The Joker that was introduced in The Killing Joke. In conclusion, I highly recommend buying this book for BOTH stories featured in it. I confess that I don't think I have ever read anything written by Ed Brubaker (probably because he unfortunately left DC Comics years back to Marvel, and I don't a lot of Marvel comic books), but after this, I understand why he is critically praised, and I hope he returns to DC Comics someday as he clearly knows how to tackle their characters and makes amazing stories with them! NOTE: I don't like to minus stars from item reviews because of shipment and condition because that would be unfair to the product, but I would like to point out that I would minus two stars from Amazon itself as I have received the book dented at the corner of the book, and the bottom of the spine was ruined and dented as well.
