Fabulous suspense, and my introduction to Eugenics in USA
The situations of indigenous people being subjected to involuntary sterilization, as well as other undesirable elements, by wealthy established people.Opened my eyes up to what the Nazis actually borrowed from us!

captivating!
Amazing story of people linked through years of love - and loss. I could not put the book down and at 4:32 am I finally read the last word - and want more. Jodi Picoult is a national treasure. Her talent is endless and amazing.

Brava, Jodi!
I'm the biggest Jodi Picoult fan, but wow, am I impressed with this book. What a story! Some of the best plot twists she's ever done. If you are into the paranormal (like me--yes, I have had experience with ghosts), you're gonna love this book. If you are not, you will suspend your disbelief. She went on real live ghost hunts with pros to research this. The book introduced me to the pseudo-science of eugenics, which attempted in the 1920s and 1930s in this country to achieve "racial purity" and formed the model only a few years later for the Nazis'euthanasia and sterilization programs to weed out "inferior" traits. This was mentioned in the film Judgment at Nuremberg (based on real cases) but I'd never heard the term before and had no idea of the widespread movement in the U.S. Picoult ties all the characters and incidents together very well without making it seem pat or contrived, and there is no lack of action. I say it's one of her best novels. Now for the nitpicking criticism. One thing I thought was inaccurate was people drinking openly in bars in 1932 when prohibition was not repealed until 1933. One man freely tells the police he tends bar for a living and gives the name and address of the place. Not that cops wouldnt have known where speakeasys were, but prohibition is never mentioned. The other thing that bothers me is not unique to this author, but is becoming a trend with many fiction writers today: the "screenplay" approach where scenes are sometimes two paragraphs, and we cut to another scene with different people in a different place. I wish she would cut this down a little, it is distracting and frustrating when you try to follow what is happening. At least make the "scenes" longer. After all, these are not lightweight books. I feel my train of thought being constantly interrupted. Let's hope this technique dies out.

Not Jodi picoults usual
This was interesting, but very hard to track. I had to write down the characters and a map of how they all related. It was good but not her best and not her normal writing.

Held my interest, but a bit confusing
I liked how the author brought everything together at the end of the book. I did have trouble following all of the characters as we switched back and forth from descriptions of the past and the present day characters. I understand why the author writes this book that way but sometimes I found myself saying, who is this again...and how are they connected to the telling of the story. I enjoy that(so far) each book that I have read by this author has some real facts behind the writing. I would say to anyone who reads this to hang in there because it all gets explained in the end. I also enjoyed the chapter after the end of the book as this explains the parts of the book taken from real life events.

Love her stuff
I have read 20/30 books or more. Love them all.I haven't read a ghost story theme so this is interesting. They usually end with courts but this doesn't and it doesn't need it.Some other books don't have courts at the end either.5/5 stars.

Breathtaking
I always find when I read one of these books I start off confused because of the amount of characters that get introduced in such a short space of time. However how Picoult manages to throw so many different layers into the story where all these characters are inextricably linked she weaves a masterful story. I only gave a four rating only due to my not being sure how I think or feel about the afterlife topic but I thought she wrote about it beautifully and within the story was mystery that needed solving which I loved. Praise to this author who is not shy to write about many debatable topics and does so in a way that makes you see things from all sides

Probably my favourite JP book so far ...
I just love Jodi Picoult's books, binging each and every one in a couple of days. I started Second Glance and unusually for me it started as a slow burner - it didn't grip me straight away like her other books tend to, so initially I dipped in and out. Then as luck would have it we had a spell of glorious weather which meant heading for the garden under the brolly with book. Well, to say the day disappeared as I lost myself in the characters and the ghost story is an understatement. I finally reached the end as the sun went down, having been gripped for several hours, but equally desolate that it had ended - I wanted Ross and Meredith's story to continue into a happy-ever-after, and see Lia returning to talk to Lucy. Such a beautifully written story, and as it happens I love a good ghost-romance (Audrey Niffenegger's Her Fearful Symmetry & Time Traveller's Wife 😉). What a lovely way to spend a day - crossing everything there'll soon be a sequel!

Wonderfully Written
Having been slowly working my way through Picoult's books, this is a clear standout from her works. Unlike her other novels it follows a slightly different formula, yet still has a sense of Picoult's charm. The book has a great beginning and gets straight into the plot, making it a relatively easy read, yet this book is full of surprises and every character has a back story, making it almost thriller-like in genre. The plot itself follows a man who feels he has lost everything searching for the ghost of his love, his sister, her son,a little girl having nightmares, a police man and a few other seemingly unrelated characters. Undoubtedly the best part about this novel is how it all comes together and the genius with which Picoult makes you want to laugh and cry all in one sentence.Second glance is a mystery, a romance, a thriller and slightly paranormal, its a roller coaster ride, you can't get off. even people getting bored of Picoult will be able to appreciate the story telling in this noel.i would recommend this for lover of Picoult, but also for people looking for a way out, of the paranormal romance rut everyone seems stuck in after twilight. although the some areas of the book may initially seem irrelevant my advice is persevere read every word, and be amazed at how it all fits in the end.this book has been one of the clear highlights of my summer and will be passed on to everyone i know, because it is such a rewarding novel.

2 Stars
I was so torn with this. I am an enormous Jodi Picoult fan - she is the reason I have such a love for books, so I wanted to love this like I love all of her books. Sadly, I just didn't. The first flaw for me was the huge amount of characters introduced so early on - and add to the fact that they are all in some way linked, I just couldn't keep up. And then, the storyline. This was such a wonderful concept which was once again just lost on me. Far fetched, complicated, over the top and way too intricate. A shame but by no means a reflection on Picoult. She is gold.

What a fantastic book
I'd not read any Jodi Picoult books for a long time, the last one being The Pact which, brilliant as it was, I found the subject matter very difficult for me at the time BUT Second Glance is fantastic, brilliantly written as usual and the subject matter, story line and characters were so interesting/intriguing/believable I read the whole book in two days! Whilst the story doesn't really lend itself to a sequel part of me really wants to know if Ross and Meredith live happily ever after and will finding Meredith make him 'mortal' again
