You donโt need a wood stove insert.
Sold my house decided to leave my pellet stove there. I realize the pellet stove was leaving a lot of dust all over our glass tables. Came to the new home lit a couple of fires And while cosmetically nice or aesthetically nice not a real barnburner so to speak not a lot of heat coming out of there It was going straight up flue. I thought about a hasty heat I didnโt wanna fan making the place look like a auto shop. So I read about the great wall of fire while warming my toes near a radiant kerosene heater. The concept is the same. Throw the heat back out in front of the unit. This thing being an 80 pound piece of cast-iron keeps the heat like you wouldnโt believe and the design of the great sense of smokes straight up the flu and draws the air through the very bottom very ingenious concept. So no pellet stove insert, no woodstove insert, just a fireplace that heats my living room like I wouldโve never known even as nice as the pellet stove I had. So you can believe me or not believe me spend The money for the simple idea make sure you watch the measurement video and order away. The box is heavy so use the cart to bring it in the house. Iโm an hour or two and Iโm toasty and totally in love I cannot wait to see a bed of embers on the floor so I can just add a log and watch it burn instantly. Thank you guys for bringing this up. I do wish the ornaments were easier to pick but I imagine I really donโt need the ornaments so not that big of a deal. I love this item and now I use my wood pallets the five bags I have left for kindling wood with some paper and thatโs about it great balls of fire. I just bought a new fire extinguisher to just in case things get dicey you never know.

A โgrateโ addition to our fireplace
Our house has a centrally located โprefab,โ recirculating fireplace that occasionally is called upon to heat a large area during winter power outages, and more often is used just to take off the chill and provide a warm, cozy atmosphere in the place. I installed one of these Grate Wall firebacks early in the season. Itโs hefty but at least in this size (15 inches high and 21 inches wide) and thickness not too heavy for one person to lift and place in the firebox. The top edge rests against the back wall of the box and the small โfeetโ hold it securely at a slight slant, so there is a bit of a gap the rest of the way down. There never has been any issue with the fireback shifting during months of use. We use a regular grate, not the โGrate Wallโ vertical design. However, as the firebox is somewhat shallow, it is simple to stack one course of split wood against the fireback and another course about halfway as high in front of that. With some cedar splints or fatwood and a bit of paper to start, seasoned wood takes right off. It will be at least an hour before you begin to get the full effect of the fireback - as the fire produces red hot coals, the fireback will get plenty hot as well and begin radiating heat; and if you let the fire die down for the night, youโll continue feeling heat from the fireback well after your wood has burned down to coals. For the price, itโs a noticeable improvement in efficiency; and likely also protects the rear wall of the firebox when youโve got a fire really cranked up. I would not hesitate to buy it again, but seriously doubt I will ever have to. This thing is solid.

This is truly a great grate
This is one of those rare products that works exactly as well as advertised and lives up to its nearly unanimously positive reviews. We bought this to replace a conventional horizontal fireplace grate, and found that, combined with a fireback, it is extremely efficient and easy to use. We previously had to continually poke at the fire, rearrange the logs, and frequently add more logs to the fire. Now after the initial set-up, we simply add a log when we want to keep the fire going - the grate's design does the rest. We have noticed a large decrease in ash residue and unburned chunks of wood, a testament to the efficiency of the grate. In addition, although we use the fireplace for pleasure rather than rely on it for heat, we have noticed an increase in heat output several feet away from the fire. In previous years when we've had blackouts in the winter we closed off the dining room where our fireplace is located and huddled around the fire. I don't anticipate or want to have another blackout, but if we did, it would be interesting to see how well the re-configured fireplace could heat the room.

Solid and heavy. Heat reflection is okay but not great.
Very thick and heavy. I like the fact that it is made in the United States with US steel. Looks and fits great at the back of my fireplace. I bought it to protect the back of the fireplace and reflect more heat out into the room because the fireplace is very inefficient. It definitely protects the back wall of the fireplace from excessive heat and logs being tossed into the fireplace box. If you are looking for something that substantially pushes the heat out into the room you may be somewhat disappointed. It does increase the heat being reflected into the room, but marginally.

Works great!!
The chimney sweeper recommended for us to get a plate, and after much research- we landed on this one. Itโs more money than a lot of others, but itโs definitely heavy duty and seems to work well. We bought the accompanying grate, and once we got the hang of it, they seem to work good.

Doubles your heat output immediately! Worth every penny
Yes, it is heavy - but when you place it one time, you will never need to move it again (unless your ash pit lid does not align with the fire back). As in woodworking, remember to measure twice, then place this beast in place once. The heat reflected into the house has at least doubled in volume. You can actually feel a noticeable difference in heat output once the Grate-Wall-of-Fire Reflective Fireback is in position. This was the smartest fireplace accessory I have purchased as it will return its value in no time. If you are a fence-sitter on this item, take the leap and you will not regret it!

Firebacks both reflect more heat into the room AND preserve your fireplace
We moved into an old house with multiple fireplaces several years ago. After a winter season of fires, we always had to have the mason come and repair cracks that developed in the brickwork. It was a mason who told me that anyone who has frequent fires should invest in a fireback. Good news: in the 10 years since then, we've never had to have the mason return for repairs. Bad news: I think the mason has gone out of business. Use this with the Grate Wall of Fire and Cutting Edge Firewood---and I"m not even a paid spokesperson!
