on the Kindle edition
The review is for the Kindle edition of the book. The material overall is great but editing for the Kindle is bad. For some reason all asterisks are missing from all monospace code samples (block comments turn to just slashes, pointers to whatever that is that is not a pointer, etc.), which may be OK for Java code but make the final chapter about the JNI quite confusing. There's a way to open samples as images, but they often don't span pages nicely. Also, the e-book was edited "for bigger screens", which is another way of saying that it is borderline possible to read it on e-book reader Kindles.

Great book, but...
This is a great book. The coverage has everything that I need, the explanations are clear and concise, and the examples really drive home the ideas. I have learned a lot from this book, but noticed that I am missing exactly 50 pages of the book. I have all of Chapter 11, but Chapter 12 starts at section 12.10. Is it like this for anyone else?

The One
If you code in Java, you have to have this book. My only complaint is that I wrote copious notes and applied miles of yellow highlighting to its predecessor, so I had to sit down for a couple of hours and transcribe them all into the new edition (except where--thank goodness--my notes addressed themselves to workarounds no longer required in SE7).If you write Java programs and you don't have this book, get it.

They are by far the best, thorough
I have been using the Core Java series (Volumes 1 & 2) as far back as the late 1990's when studying Java in community college. They are by far the best, thorough, concise and well written books on Java I've read. I recently purchased the ninth edition of these books in order to stay current on the latest features of Java. I highly recommend them!

No Web Service content
The book description lists Web Services as part of the content. It does this at the same level as the chapters, yet there is no chapter on Web Services. There is one page in the 1152 pages that mentions web services, and then it only says that the book will not discuss them (instead it will talk about RMI). This is false advertising! I chose this book over other comprehensive Java books because I also wanted to know more about web services. However, the rest of the book is very in depth and well organized so it still gets a couple stars since it satisfied a comprehensive overview.

Adequate
This book is adequate but not much more. It tries to cover a lot of territory, which it succeeds in doing. However, each topic I was interested in was not covered in any level of depth to be of much use to me. I don't use it often as a reference book because it doesn't go into enough detail.

great for beginner
The two volume book provide enough depth for beginner to start with & also leave room for reader themselves to explore in Internet to get further, like how to access c++ library done by others.I think it would be better if the book covers more on RMI, SECURITY, NATIVE CODE, NIO, crypto, & etc rather than swing

Excellent Reference/learning tool
This is one of the best Java reference/learning books I have found to date. It is easy to read and understand and paired with volume 1 is a relatively complete core java reference for any developer.I highly recommended this book if you are just starting out or looking for a good java language reference.
