This is an excellent tool, especially for someone with no previous experience cutting crown molding. Step-by-step instructions are included, showing what bevel angle and miter angle to use on a compound miter saw after the measurement from the tool is known. The scale is easy to read, and the plastic body is sturdy but light weight. The tool can be used for a wide variety of measurements beyond crown molding. A few dollars invested in this tool could save a lot of trial-and-error aggravation, not to mention wasted material. Highly recommended!

There are likely quite a few fakes in circulation from Amazon and elsewhere. I ordered one from a third-party seller with fulfillment by Amazon, but upon close inspection after receiving the item, it turned out to be a fake. I purchased a second that was actually "sold by" - not just "fulfilled by" - Amazon and from inspection I'm sure it is genuine. Please see my photos with the details. The fake was very close in almost every way. Without a real one next to it, it was a challenge to identify. If I had bought it as an off-brand out of a bargain bin, I probably wouldn't have had any complaints. It still looked pretty functional. I wanted the real tool for this though; I just couldn't get past the concern that I would end up with less precise finished miters and/or more rework with the fake. The fake I got appeared to be pretty close on accuracy though. Differences: Laser Engraving- Real has true laser-etched dial with consistent alignment of markings and numbers. The laser actually "digs" tiny trenches with a little roughness at the edges of each engraved "trench". Feels a little like sandpaper when sliding finger across markings. Fake had some sort of printed markings deposited on top of the surface with some of the digits poorly aligned. Markings could be felt, but were much smoother than laser engraved. Would expect less precision in this method of manufacture. Fit & Finish- Real has a bold yellow inlay with a precise geometry that lays in flush as intended. Fake had a little more drab, somewhat translucent, yellow inlay with less precise geometry that didn't entirely lay in flush as intended. Could just barely see some the structural ribs in the plastic behind the yellow inlay on the fake because of the inlays translucency. Pivot Screw- Real has a pivot screw head that is ø0.65" (21/32") [16.5mm] in diameter. Fake had a pivot screw head that was smaller at ø0.60" (19/32") [15.2mm]. Package- Real had a Proposition 65 warning sticker on the back and was not stapled closed. Fake was stapled closed and did not have a Proposition 65 warning sticker. Printing on fake was extremely close to that of the real article. Fake happened to have some barcode stickers on the exterior, but still had the same original barcode inside the package. Some of the details may be different on other fakes. These are just the most discernible discrepancies I noted on this specific fake. My rating is based entirely on the legitimate product I received, not on the fake.

I used this little tool to help install baseboard in my house. Indispensable tool for that job and $30 well spent. Watch out for fakes though. To avoid fakes, only order the Starrett Miter Protractor fulfilled by Amazon Services. The easiest way to tell if you have a real one is if the numbers are etched into the dial. Fakes have it printed onto the dial. I almost didn't buy this tool because of all the bad reviews on Amazon talking about how it wasn't accurate. Then I read a review (with pictures) about how to identify fakes and made sure to order the one that is fulfilled by Amazon. There are a bunch of different sellers that offer this item...up to 50% cheaper. Don't be fooled or tempted...just spend the extra $5- $15. It really is professional level tool for determining miter angles and the true angle of inside and outside corners.

Great compact angle finder. Out of box was less than 1 degree off. Good for rough carpentry. It will be hard to find precision for the price. Again know your application. Better than a standard square in certain applications. The fact no batteries is great as well.

This is such a great tool!! It has made putting in baseboards a breeze. My home has a bunch of unusual angles, and as an older home, many of the walls aren’t even plumb. Using this, I can get each miter cut done perfectly. Add in some CA glue and activator to fix the boards ahead of time, and it’s a cinch to have perfect angles. I can’t imagine trying to line everything up without this.

The preferred tool to cut miters when doing trim work in a house. it is a bit smaller than I expected. I got the idea to get this from a youtube video There are some other options, but this is the simplest and most effective. You can set it to match either an inside, or outside corner angle, and you can read the half-angle off of the tool (it has an arrow that points to it) . I used another tool first, then I bought this and fared better with this than I did with the other tool.

I've used this protractor several times so far. I'm new to Woodworking, but gaining more skill and knowledge daily. I've invested in quite a few measuring tools, so I can make sure I have accurate guidance when it comes to cutting :) Reading the dial originally was a bit tricky. Once you learn how to read it, its quite an accurate tool A few positives: ** Great size. Works well with my dewalt 12" dual bevel miter saw ** Rotates quite easy and its incredibly easy to read! ** If you plan to cut any sort of trim ~ GET THIS PROTRACTOR! I wish all my tools were built this well ... Plan to look at other Starrett measuring tools in the future since I like this protractor so much.

I purchased because as a novice doing crown molding, I was constantly tweaking corners to make them fit better, as few corners are 90s. With the protractor, it lists the exact cut (end of red arrow). You set your miter saw and cut (I also use a Milescraft Crown-45 to cut the crown as it hangs on the wall - it helps novices not make the cuts in the wrong direction and it helps you keep you hands well away from the blade - getting ready to review that). I have had very good success at having near perfect matches. The tool moves very easily, does not slip when you remove from wall, is easy to read, and seems to be good quality. Had I seen the pro version I might have opted for that, but I am extremely pleased with this version. I also prefer the 7" as it measures closer to where the crown pieces meet.
