The Handmade Alphabet (Picture Puffins)

I received this as a gift as a child and I loved it. It is just a simple sign language alphabet book (with the most beautiful illustrations!!!) but it made me become interested in sign language, pursue learning more, and choose the career path of teaching deaf students. I just bought the book as an adult and it is as good as I remember. Now I use it with my students. Teacher tip: pair these letter signs with learning the letter sounds!!!

One of my kids originally found this book at a book fair in the 90's, and wore it out during the years. I was so happy to find a great copy on Amazon - the drawings are beautiful and honestly when I am forming the letters when finger spelling the alphabet, I can see those pictures in my head even after all these years.

This is a must-have for the classroom! We use it in The Story of Written Language and in The Human Body. You could also very easily use it in an Art class. The drawings of the hands are just gorgeous.

I had this book growing up and loved it, so I bought a copy to share with my daughters. The illustrations are beautiful and it makes learning the ASL alphabet a breeze!

I taught American Sign Language last year, and I loved using this book for an artistic display of the manual alphabet. I felt bad tearing the pages out, but I had purchased 2 copies because it was priced so well! All my students loved looking at the pictures on the wall, which were especially helpful for students who had trouble remembering particular letters. The artistry is wonderful, definitely recommend!

Excellent presentation to the alphabet for hearing and non hearing students and children.

Beautiful book. The drawings are very simple to show you how to make the hand shapes as well as what they would relate to. Ie. W = picture of water. Very inclusive book showing all different skin tones of people. Excellent book to help you learn the sign language alphabet. I highly recommend it.
