The King of the Budget A/V Receivers
It's hard to beat Sony for just about anything regarding budget (not low-end or cheap) audio products. I am not made of money (I know, shocker!) so when I look into something as substantial as audio equipment, and in this case an amp or receiver, I'm looking for value as well as quality because I'm going to be keeping it for a long time. The STR-DH590 is replacing a 30-year old analog Technics A/V receiver with surround capabilities that has served me well for all of those years on the audio side. But like I mentioned, it's analog only. No optical or coaxial digital ports and certainly no HDMI inputs or built-in DAC (because, why would it?) With my entry into streaming audio to go along with my records and CDs collection that I still listen and add to every so often, and with a TV that has HDMI-eARC capabilities and video streaming from Roku, I figured I should probably move into more modern times and that meant new receiver. Yes, I had been using a DAC with HDMI input (SMSL PS-100) and it performed really well because that's what SMSL does. But I needed something better and so I bought a refurbished DH590. I've had it for a couple of months now and it performs and sounds sweet. I only recently figured out how to "unlock" HDMI-eARC to my bluray player and that's because the manual that comes with it kind of lacks in the how-to department. But surround capabilites are there; there are Right AND Left subwoofer outputs which allows me to beef up both two-channel speakers and make the music soar that much more; it has multiple music and movie settings depending upon how you like your sound; but it does NOT have a phono input. This kind of stuck me as a negative at first but you can find inexpensive and good phono pre-amps for turntables that don't have one built-in and just run the RCA line-out to one of the many line-in stations on DH590. Problem solved. I could go on but you've gone on to another review by now so I will wrap this up by saying buy it if you're needing a capable, powerful, well-built receiver and anything that costs more than a car payment is out of the question. By the way, I'm still employing an external DAC with the DH590 but only using it with my Wiim Mini streamer because it's an SMSL SU-1 and it sounds so good coming through the Sony. They're a good pairing.

Excellent quality and perfect replacement.
I purchased this amp to replace my old, obsolete Technics amp. I'm a electronics technician and I finally got to the point that I could not get the necessary parts to repair it. I was very happy to find something that was compatible with all of my speaker system. This amp is excellent quality and will work with all of the other electronics in my theater system and more. The price was quite reasonable too. Ken Beamish

Great sound
Has worked flawless so far, I wasn’t aware that it needed a powered subwoofer though. Listing could have been clearer on that.

Great sound, as expected.
There's really not much I can find as cons. Sony isn't prone to making bad audio devices, so you go in expecting great sound and easy setup. Boom! You got it. The on screen menus are easy enough to navigate. The only thing I can think of to complain about is the tuner. It's kinda difficult to get the presets set for FM stations. That's it, really. Maybe some of the settings that only show on the receiver rather than on the tv screen could be a little easier to see from a distance, but I'm also older than mummy farts, so that may be my eyes.

Wont last a year
Bought this Sony receiver thinking it would last, but it failed completely and now won’t stop going into “protect mode” even with nothing plugged in. I just past the 1 year warranty, so Sony won’t help, and I’m stuck with a useless receiver I barely got any life out of. Total waste of money. I should’ve spent a little more on another brand instead of dealing with this headache. Not recommended.

Excellent product
My 20 year old Onkyo receiver finally gave up the ghost. I wanted a replacement that was affordable and gave this a try. It took a few attempts to hook up everything correctly as technology has changed a lot and most everything is HDMI now. Bluetooth pairs easily and the included auto calibration for surround works very well—you also can program in the settings manually. The bass output is stronger than my last one so I did need to retune my subwoofer, but everything sounds great. You can also choose different modes so watching a Blu-ray is processed differently than streaming. It’s a good, solid workhorse.
