Radio Controlled Helicopters: The Guide to Building and Flying R/C Helicopters

Timeless
Some have been describing the book's contents as dated, yet there are people who would still want to fly liquid-fuel-engined RC whirly-birds.The contents covers enough about building and flying RC whirly-birds (helicopters), and has enough pages of useful information to warrant the price. It also includes practising techniques that should have been included in other books (by other authors) about RC drone flying for newbies to the hobby/sport, so the knowledge is transferable.I practice with fix-winged airplane, multi-blade drone, and helicopter RC aircraft, and I find the challenge of flying helicopters the best for training orientation skills. What one learns with "whirly-birds" is maneuvering an aircraft in such a manner so as to be able focus a RC camera with such an aircraft. The skills are transferable to camera drones. It is easier to maneuver a drone, but a helicopter forces one to focus more in practising such maneuvers.A worthy book with useful knowledge, even for those who fly "LiPo-fuelled" whirly-birds.

Radio Control Helicopters
A little dated by the time I read it in 2005, but very useful none the less. Full of helpful advice, plus do and don'ts of model flying. It also put to rest some of the older ideas about flying this type of model, like don't try and get someone to hold the tail towards you with a piece of string. You will probably end up nearly killing them. Yes there is some dark humour in there as well.I also liked the fact that most of the book was put in beginners terms, which I am, although I will have to keep it as reference and read it later. So I am quite happy with my purchase and can thouroughy recommend it.

Well written but out of date.
This was an excellent book in 1996. In 2007 its badly in need of a re-write. Its coverage of electric flight, 2.4GHz radios, HH gyros and simulators is misleading or entirely absent.Buy it and read it - but find additional info elsewhere.

The guide to building and flying R/C
This in not for beginners like me, I thought it might have been for those less expensive models with electric motors, this is not the case. I did not feel the description of the book was rather misleading. Is there something in printthat would be more suitable for me? I hope to find such a publication.

So outdated that it gives misinformation.
The copy I purchased had it's last printing in 2010, but the text hasn't been updated since it was first published in 1996. If you are considering electric versus engines, forget this book. It was written when nicad batteries were the only choice. The author quickly dismisses electric helicopters saying they can't match the performance of engines. This is not true. New (since this book was written) technology advances in batteries and electric motors have made electrics more powerful than engines in many cases. Also, flight times now exceed five minutes, the maximum flight time stated for electrics, in this book.If you want advice on simulators, forget this book. If you want advice on radios and available frequencies, forget this book. If you want to know about current helicopter technology, forget this book. If you are interested in aerial photography/video, forget this book as there is no mention of it. If you want information regarding available helicopters, forget this book.Come to think of it, forget this book.
