Thank god for this book and a random youtube stranger
Added:Almost 8 months now and still smoke free! Not sure I'll keep updating but happened to be here. I've had a few 'light' cravings. Like, I'm distracted when I get in my car and have a passing thought about lighting a cig. This past month has been more stressful than before so I've found myself thinking about smoking more often. I've realized I REALLY don't want to smoke again when I've imagined actually smoking, just old habits/crutches ya know. You build your life around smoking without even realizing it. It takes time for new (hopefully healthier) habits to form, I'm honestly still figuring that out. I realized I keep forgetting to water my porch plants because I never go out there anymore!Added:Almost 6 months now and still smoke free. I can't remember the last craving I had to be honest. It's just pure relief not being a smoker anymore. I remember having such anxiety about a family vacation to a theme park and worrying about where I'd smoke. I don't even think about smoking anymore and sometimes forget I even smoked. Time flies! (wrote this in a particularly good day)Edited to add:4 months later and I'm still going strong. I still have cravings every so often, 1-3 a month depending. Stress in particular brings them on of course, sometimes boredom. The cravings go away pretty quickly. I've only had a couple really bad cravings, hard to describe but more like...my skin is tingling. I was able to get through them by actually imagining myself smoking and remembering that last horrible cigarette.I genuinely feel better. I can breathe better, I'm not gasping for air after walking up from the basement, and I don't cough crap up constantly. I didn't gain any weight and have recently started working out (which helps me feel even better). If you're reading the reviews hopefully it means you're considering buying it for yourself or someone you love/care about. Do it. If it helps you, fantastic. If not, you're no worse off than you were before.Original review:I bought this book a week ago today and wish I could buy a copy for every smoker on the planet. I've been wanting to quit smoking for awhile (said every smoker ever) but was really nervous about it. I've been smoking for about 16 years, I started when I was 17. I'd already backed out of one quit date about a month ago after talking to another smoker about going cold turkey (he told me I'd kill someone and I chickened out). But I'd gotten to the point I hated smoking. I was desperate for a solution and started researching. The nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs) are a crap shoot in terms of effectiveness. The most effective way to quit and stay a non-smoker is cold turkey. However, all you hear about the cold turkey method is how horrible it is. I was trying to pump myself up and mentally prepare by watching youtube videos when I read about this book in the comments section. I honestly thought it was a joke or some kind of scam when I first saw it. But I googled it and ended up on Amazon. The reviews raved about how great this book is, how effective, and it made quitting so easy. It got my hopes up but I was skeptical. I started reading, desperately hoping it works. I read it over a couple days, smoking more than I normally did as my quit day got closer. Cigarettes started tasting/smelling awful, I started coughing badly when I smoked, and at the end I was actually gagging to the point of nearly throwing up when I smoked. I hated it even more, wondering WTH I was doing. All because of this book. I thought I'd finished the few cigs I had left in my pack but didn't. I smoked less than half of my last cigarette, coughing and gagging the whole time. I stubbed it out and haven't smoked since. I will never smoke again. Had I been at home and not work I would have cried from relief (and I'm not a crier) when I realized I'd smoked my last cigarette. I thought about smoking just one more, a last one to really remember it but I realized I didn't want it. I tossed the rest of my cigarettes and lighter in the trashcan when I got home. It's been one week. I've never tried to quit before so I don't really have anything to compare it to. The first few days I felt quite antsy but happy. I was excited about being a non-smoker. The cravings pass pretty quickly and have gotten easier. I would just try to distract myself, I recommend having a list of things to do. I sew so I bought a bunch of fabric and picked out things to make. Aprons are a good one. There have been a few bad cravings but I went out on my porch (where I used to smoke) and stood out there for a few minutes taking some deep breaths. It really helped. Only once did I think about buying cigarettes but I immediately realized that it was my addiction and not me that wanted me to buy cigarettes. I still have some cravings but it takes time for nicotine to leave your body. The kind of high/happiness/excitement I had after smoking my last cigarette has slowly dissipated for me but not has not affected the ease of quitting. I'm still happy to be a non-smoker, pity those who still smoke but I no longer have the urge to sing from mountain tops and hug strangers (which was a weird urge for me anyway). But I do still feel overall happier or maybe relieved is a better way to put it. Like a weight has been lifted. I don't know why this book worked for me and not others. Maybe because I was so desperate to quit, maybe because I really tried to follow what the book told me to do, or maybe I'm just lucky. I'm just glad to have found it.This book is amazing and I'm so incredibly grateful for it. I bought the Kindle version that's clearly for UK buyers (I'm in the US) but it still worked. $8 to help me quit a god awful addiction. I hope this book gets talked about more, I plan on telling all the smokers I know about it. If you're serious about getting people to quit, this book needs to be talked about and recommended. Please read this book and keep an open mind. What do you have to lose?

Life-changing
I bought this book after 5 days of not smoking, looking for something to support me so it wouldn’t just be another failed cold-turkey attempt. The book is terribly written but oh so effective. I would advise you not to skip any sections. I’m certain the way it drones on and on before getting to the good stuff is there for a reason. The main thing about this book it that it breaks down and destroys all those concepts that always bring us back to smoking: ‘it tastes good’, ‘it relaxes me’, etc., etc. The points that destroy these concepts are quite succinct and easy to rememember so you can be your own support system when you get cravings, which are weak and few and far between. I can safely say that in 4 months of not smoking, I’ve had less than 10 cravings, and they always disappear when I counter them to one of Carr’s points.Last point: if you, like me, have been eyeing this book and thinking “geez, dunno if I want to spend $8 bucks on something that might not work”, then you are an idiot. Buy it.

I felt pretty good about the whole thing for a total of ...
I can see how this book may help with quitting once you get past the first 3 - 5 days, but it was not helpful with the initial withdrawal symptoms.I read the book twice, followed his directions, and had a very positive mindset as I put out my last cigarette. I felt pretty good about the whole thing for a total of about 12 hours and then I felt like I was in hell. My withdrawal symptoms were not "slight pangs" or anywhere near as mild as he describes them. I did quit, but I quit in spite of this book not because of it.It's wonderful so many were able to quit so easily due to this book, but I was not one of them.

Cessation
As a physician in charge of a smoking cessation clinic, I have been using a different system than described in this book. The results have been frustrating and not very encouraging. I will try his system and see if the results improve. Carr's technique has been very successful and far better than those used by standard methods in the USA.

This edition is a little different than the first one I read but I believe 110% it will work as good if not better
I have read this once before and proudly quit for 2 years and even boasted about this book.. but then tried someone's vape, they told me it didn't have nicotine then I found out later it did, and started smoking cigarettes again a short time after that. I'm reading this for the second time knowing when I read that last page it will be my last cigarette as well! This edition is a little different than the first one I read but I believe 110% it will work as good if not better! Must read if you want to stop tobacco!

Like most people
If you've thought about quitting smoking this is definitely the book you should read. Like most people, I was skeptical when it was suggested to me by friends who had used it to quit. After all, what could this do that the patch, Nicorette and Chantix couldn't? All previous attempts had ended in spectacular failure for me. What I couldn't shake using the aforementioned products is that while I was using them I still wanted to have a cigarette, which was bizarre to me since these things were supposed to kill the cravings yet somehow never really did. The book will address why you think you need to smoke and dispel any preconceived notions you think you may have about addiction and quitting. Granted, it took me a couple of times to read through this book for things to stick but I ended up quitting cold turkey as Mr. Carr suggests and I've been free for two months - and that's with going to the bar, drinking and being around smokers. I'd suggest downloading one of the stop smoking apps too like Drop It! so you can track the days, dollars and physical changes that happen as you become a non-smoker again. Don't wait another second, if you want to quit buythis book - you will not regret it.

If you are expecting the Classic edition, this is not it.
This book is listed as being the Classic guide, and even the date is listed as May 16, 1985. But this is not the classic edition. I once owned the classic edition and in it, it stated that smoking was 100% in your head (brainwashing). The newer editions have been updated since it was soon-after proven that nicotine was addictive. That is fine, and I am not disputing any of those facts. But what I had been led to believe was that I was purchasing a 'Classic guide from 1985', and that is what I expected to receive. Instead, this is the more 'modern', up to date version, stating mostly about nicotine being addictive. The book even goes on to talk about the 'first edition' several times. The !st edition (the one I previously owned, and that worked so well for me that I foolishly lent to someone who then lost it) has been something I have searched for for years. I thought at last that I had finally found it. I have read the 'updated' version before, and it did not work for me. I was very disappointed to discover this book is not what I had thought I'd bought.

You have to want to quit for this to work
I got this book after much debating as I was told by others that it did not work. I have to say.. it has worked for me! I was a pack a day smoker for over 30 years and nobody would ever believe that I could quit but I did. Now 45 days smoke free! For this book to work you have to a) want to quit and b) be open minded to the suggestions in the book. Allen Carr does hit on the withdrawals, comparing them to hunger pangs (which they were), what was not covered was the disruption to your sleep or maybe that was just me. I quit with no aid (except the instructions in the book) and so far have not desire to smoke again.

Best book in the market.
If you want to quit smoking, you need to be in particular state of mind. This book hepled me to get into that state of mind. I started reading this book 2-3 daays after quitting (cold turkey) those initial 2-3 days, i was craving for hundreds of times in a day. But as I kept reading this book, my cravings got minimized and finally I stopped craving for cigarettes. If you want to get help from this book, read it carefully and not just as some formality.

best purchase I've made. smoke free since may 17,2014
Was the 1st time i actually quit smoking. Haven't touched a cigaretty since may 17, 2014. Was almost no withdrawl. Thanks to this book. I recommend it to all my friends but theyre skeptical.I know lots of people and read many reviews before wasting my time. That many of us can't be liars. Its less then a pack of smokes so was well worth a try for me and its best purchase ive ever made.

Skeptical and first but it worked
I smoked for 20 years, and quit several times but couldn't make it last. I was actually quite skeptical about the book but it turns out it was just what I needed. It actually changed my perception of smoking on a fundamental level. I quit 2 weeks ago and I feel confident, passionate and exhilarated. If you really want to quit, and you're ready... I think this book is a great guide to help you through the process.
