This is a wonderful resource for calligraphers. Cicale has history of the hands but she has broken down the steps to creating the hands. There is really good information on layout, composition,design, focal point and spacing. I am a new calligrapher but between this book and my instructor I am getting the eye for breaking down the lettering and really seeing the strokes.The rest is practice, practice, practice. I have other books on calligraphy but really this is one of the best. Not all the hands are here but she has detailed instructions on Romans and monoline, using the broad edged pens, and instruction on Foundational, Italic, Uncial, Blackletter and a few more. There is also a chapter on Pointed pen and other writing tools. I have other books supposed to be the " be all' of calligraphy but I think Annie Cicale has created a book for beginners to advanced letterers.

I have at least half a dozen calligraphy books, and this is the one I turn to when I want inspiration and the only one I would rate 5 stars. It's not my first calligraphy book, so I can't say whether it's a good standalone intro, but it should definitely be in the first 3 for a budding calligrapher. The information is solid and varied, I was delighted to see a discussion on layout, as well as some more exotic tools like ruling pens.

I just love this book. I borrowed it from the library first and then wanted my own copy. I don't do calligraphy but if anything would inspire me to start trying it would be this book. The samples and photos are lovely to look at and it's a pleasure to have my own copy of this beautiful book.

A good resource. I wish it had been a little bit more details as to how to make the letters etc., but it is a very good reference material.

Excellent book with lots of info on how to improve your caligraphy and create the letters correctly.

Amazing amount of clear instruction for the not faint hearted student!!! I am going through chapter by chapter & truly enjoying it!
