The Eagles Selected Works 1972 - 1999 four CD box set is an important release in the Eagles catalog, having shipped almost a half million units worldwide and is certified RIAA Platinum. It was originally released in the year 2000 in a traditional large box set format. We are now re-formatting the box into a more concise CD-sized digi pack.

Very good compilation.
Great sounds! Some songs were a first for me. The last disc is all concert / live performance. Greatmusic but I could do without the audience screaming and whistling!

This surprised me on how great it was
This was a live concert recorded. There were songs I had never heard b4 and that is truly amazing. I have loved them all the way back b4 the 1st greatest hits. Now I have new music from them that I can love . Ole 55 is a outstanding song that I had never heard. I have seen them in concert probably 5 times at least and they never disappointed me however I think it was a really bad move to let go of Fingers Felder as all the great guitar came from him. Including Hotel California..now that Glen has passed away I don't have much hope that they will do much together. It was nice to have his son play with the band but the millennium concert was kinda cringe worthy through the entire concert. Tim is so undervalued and they really need another vocalist. This set is wonderful and outstanding in its arrangement. You will have no problem loving it and the songs from long ago that never made it to a album. I think it will be the last of New music for them . Not bcuz they couldn't write it but 2 major players who have been around since the beginning are conspicuously absent and the music in the Millennium cd set accentuated the missing members. This is still all of them together being their incredible selves. Enjoy.

Many good songs, but also some notable omissions
The Eagles have been a staple of the radio for the last 30 years, meaning that for most of us, we have heard the hits more times than we need to, much as we love the songs. When purchasing a compilation by the band, the goal should be to mine their catalog for their lesser-known songs to unearth gems that deserve to be played more.It took some detective work in my part to determine if "Selected Works" met that goal, as the four CDs are arranged by theme in two cases: "The Ballads" and "The Fast Lane," by era: "The Early Days," and by event: "The Millennium Concert." This set-up does not always work as "The Early Days" contains both ballads: "Peaceful, Easy Feeling" and rockers: "Take it Easy," and "Already Gone." The album "One of These Nights" is represented as "The Early Days" with "Hollywood Waltz," "The Ballads" with "Lyin' Eyes" and "The Fast Lane" with "One of these Nights." I would have preferred chronological presentation that groups songs as they were originally written, as the Eagles did tend to create albums by theme. No matter what their songs, the Eagles sound wonderful with a rotating palette of lead singers, and outstanding vocal harmonies, all supported by interesting guitar work. There is a lot to like with this compilation, as all the major hits are represented, sometimes more than once, as both "Hotel California" and "Peaceful Easy Feeling" are heard in both their studio and live versions. There are also frustrations in what was omitted. In comparing the original albums with "Selected Works," this is what I found. From "The Eagles," their first album, the essential tracks are represented, but I would have also liked the songs "Nightingale," "Chug All Night" and "Tryin'" included. The essential tracks from the album "Desperado" also are here, except for "Twenty-One" and "Out of Control." Four strong songs from "On the Border" (my favorite Eagles album) are not here, but should be: "Good Day in Hell", "My Man", "You Never Cry Like a Lover" and "Is it True?" and one song is represented by the live version: "Ol' 55." The album "One of These Nights" has the essential tracks here. The entire "Hotel California" album is here, spread out over three CDs with "Victim of Love" found only in a live version. "The Long Run" has the essential tracks, and thankfully leaves off a few week less interesting tracks, such as "Teenage Jail." Two of the four studio tracks are here from "Hell Freezes Over": The nasty "Get Over It" and the pretty "Love Will Keep Us Alive." The collection should also include "The Girl From Yesterday." Room for the songs I would like to see included could have been found by leaving off 20 minutes of outtakes and studio chatter at the end of "The Fast Lane" CD from the collection, or by simply adding songs, as there is plenty of room on each CD.As for the concert CD, I wasn't impressed. I prefer the original studio versions of the hits, and I really don't need concert versions of Henley's solo songs, as I find his relentless cynicism and negativity hard to stomach at times. If he doesn't like the TV news, as presented in "Dirty Laundry," then do what I do: don't watch it. The summary for me of this collection is that there are many good songs, but there are also too many boring songs: "Pretty Little Maids All in a Row" and "King of Hollywood" being two examples of songs that would have made this collection stronger by their exclusion. I prefer the Randy Meisner era of the Eagles to the Joe Walsh years, and these two songs are good examples of how the Eagles were affected by the loss of Meisner from their ranks.
