Great radio, brilliant for the price, this the one you need.
Great radio, I used chirp then I flashed it as well. I have a great scanner radio now. I can transmit but only if you have a licence to do so. You use chirp first add the frequencies into the radio. Make sure you back up your radio frequencies first, just in case you want to put the original frequencies back in at a later date. Then you flash your radio with the custom firmware. I have a turned a good radio into a amazing scanner radio. Also buy a decent aerial from Amazon still a rubber duck one but larger you will be able to pick up alot more on your radio even inside your house. I brought aRetevis RHD771 Walkie Talkie Antenna, SMA-F, VHF UHF 144/430, Compatible with Baofeng GT5R UV-5R UV-5RE BF-888S eSynic UV-5R Retevis RT5R RA79 Quansheng UVK5 Radtel RT-470X (1 Pcs) both are definitely great together. If you are not sure how to use use chirp with your PC or laptop there are plenty of YouTube videos, also plenty of flashing your radio with a custom firmware. You will need a cable as well. I hope this helps you. You won't be sorry.

Came with unusual plug on the charger, dangerous?
The radio is well made, and seems to work ok BUT the 3 pin plug attached to the charger appears to be unfused and non-compliant with UK standards. Has anybody else had this issue?I've done some research online and people are suggesting that it's very unsafe.I've looked for similar plugs on these chargers online but haven't found any so far.

The receiver is very easily overloaded.
The radio seems strongly built and the transmit audio is very good. As far as the receiver goes, it's overloaded by the Emley moor TV mast when using it on 70 cm, even though the mast is more than 5 miles away. There is also the FM radio mast at Holme Moss, which is 8 miles away, and cripples reception on 2 metres. Unless you are going to be using these radios in the middle of nowhere, far away from strong transmitters you will find yourself listening to nothing, or a lot of static, even though your transmissions can be received by someone on a decent radio 20 miles away with ease. Whatever you do, don't plug one of these into a decent ariel, things get much, much worse. Many speak of weak receive, and after much research I believe this is the main reason people can't hear even quite strong stations. That's my honest opinion. Take it, or leave it.

Great range even before programming
Good transceiver all round . Compatible to radio many times more expensive. Expanding opens up a world of radio . (Ham licence requirements to transmit) simply amazing

Genuine UV-5(8) Kit with UK Charger and Antenna
Genuine UV-5(8) with 'UK Voltage' charger and Antenna as well as the Battery with clip and a hand loop. The ones I received are in the 'new' low profile box, clearly 2024 production, compatible with CHIRPnext and the usual widely available firmware's and loaders. As usual the factory test frequencies need replacing (by keyboard or PC-programming) with more appropriate ones for your planned/permitted UK use and this all worked fine. Quick frequency, receiver and transmit power tests confirmed these are the real thing . .As usual its a bit of an effort to get a programming cable in the first time but fine thereafter.Talking of programming cables at one point on the sellers page (as of 28 Oct 2024) it suggests a USB programming cable for PC programming is included although it doesn't appear in any of their Photos.Personally I've never seen one of these come with the programming cable and as expected neither of my 2 boxes did include one.So no surprise but a nudge to the seller to update this . . (may have been done by the time you read this )If you do need one it's made for a 'Kenwood plug' type (so Baofeng, Wouxun etc) USB programming cables fit fine and many will have one they use already . .

The supplied charger dock is dangerous. Radio probably ok though.
Supplied charging dock has a 230v UK mains plug attached which does not conform to BS1363 as the plug is unfused & on a thin 2 core cable. Fuse essential to protect the cable as part of the UK wiring system. Also inside charger, live & neutral wires soldered wrong way around, cable can touch one of the two low voltage charger prongs. Doesn't conform to Class 2 double insulation & PCB looks like it might not have sufficient separation of mains & DC output. Only rating 1 star as such poor quality mains items must be taken off the market. UK trading standards take note! Radio is probably OK & keeping it as I'll charge it using the USB-C socket on the radio.
