it just works
Works as described. I'd picked up a Spectre 50" TV that turned out to have no volume control on the headphone jack audio output, so I couldn't remote-control the volume into my analog audio system. Plugged the optical cable into the TV's digital optical out jack, set the TV digital audio to "PCM" in the menus, plugged everything else in, and it just worked. Nice clean sound. Only minor complaint is, it has somewhat coarse volume control - ten levels total, plus off - but that's tolerable. As for having one more remote to keep track of, this should finally motivate me to get a good programmable remote and collect all the commands I routinely use in one place.

WORKS w Samsung 7 Series TV and Bose speakers
THIS is the product that worked for my Samsung 4K Smart TV (UN43TU7000) to get audio to my old Bose Companion 3 speaker/sub system. Someone else posted a review with photos of the same Bose system so I had a feeling it would work and IT WORKS! Came with a power cable and plug so I connected that to the converter box first, saw that the LED power light was on, then plugged the included Toslink cable into the back of my TV and it clicked securely in (another converter system DID NOT securely go into my TV digital optical port and I couldn’t get sound with it, so as soon as I heard that click I knew this was already the better purchase). Then I connected the other end of the Toslink into the converter box and switched the output selection to ‘Toslink’ with the ‘Select’ button on the front of the box (options are either ‘Toslink’ or ‘Coaxial’). THEN I plugged in my 3.5 mm aux cord from my Bose subwoofer and BOOM!! immediately produced perfect sound out of the two Bose speakers that are connected to the sub. also has sound coming out of the TV speakers at the same time. I didn’t even have to go into my audio settings. I can have it play sound from both the TV speaker and the Bose system if I leave Sound Output set to TV Speaker and Digital Audio Output Format set to Auto. If I want just the Bose I change those settings to Optical and PCM. If I want just the TV speakers I can just use the remote to turn off the converter box.The remote is awesome and allows you to control the output from the Bose speakers and you can also still use the Samsung TV remote to control sound coming out of the TV itself. I can adjust the volume on the converter box either manually or with the remote, the Bose control dial (requires getting my lazy butt up), and my TV using the Samsung remote to get the perfect audio output for any situation. SO HAPPY THIS WORKS! so far no issues with Hulu, YoutubeTV, Netflix. no audio delays.

Not fancy but works well to add remote volume control to old equipment
I still use vintage audio gear with my main TV, so I'd have to get up to go change the volume all the time. I found this and figured I'd give it a try for adding remove volume. It works pretty well. All my HDMI sources go into my TV and I use a programmable remote to handle source switching and control for everything. The optical digital out from my TV feeds this box, and then I run the analog audio from the box to my stereo preamp. I keep the preamp set to the highest volume that I'd want to hear and then use the remote that came with this unit to control the volume from the couch.Sound quality is fine to my ears; this isn't audiophile-grade stuff, but honestly the quality of audio components has gotten so high that I'd have to work really hard to hear any difference between this and a fancier DAC. The box is lightweight plastic but it's hidden where I don't see it so that doesn't matter either. It uses a USB power supply, and is happy using the power from one of my TV USB ports so it turns on and off with the rest of the equipment. I'm sure I could program it into my master remote, but I've chosen not to so that I still have control over the TV volume if I want to use the internal speakers ever. This box has optical and coaxial digital inputs and can be switched from either the remote or the front panel. I like the flexibility, though I don't have any coaxial sources at this point. It also has both RCA and 1/8" stereo outputs that can be used at the same time, which is another nice feature sometimes. The only complaint I have is that the volume steps are pretty coarse, so sometimes the sound is just a little softer or a little louder than you really want. That's not been a problem much for me but it is a weak point. Other than that, this is doing a great job of adding remote volume control to my old equipment until I finally decide to upgrade.

Very cool device for utilizing vintage tech
Have an old Sony sound system - AT-AX401 amp, tuner and DVD/CD player and they still work great. Bought a new digital TV and couldn't plug it into my sound system until I found this device.Using the Toslink connection in the back of the TV, the converter uses RCA plugs to the back of the "Video In" ports of the amp. It simply and seamlessly pipes sound into my great sounding system and saved me some coin. The volume remote is an awesome feature as I can turn down the TV volume, ramp up the sound system and easily control volume and mute. While it's a little inconvenient to have a separate remote, the convenience outweighs the annoyance. The setup was fast and simple, the result met every expectation. The price is great, too. Comes with everything you need except batteries for the remote (2-AAA) . Recommended.

Volume controls sub par with LG TV. At least in my experience.
It did work at converting the digital signal. I am no fool, especially with electronics but I could not get this box in any configuration to volume down. Volume up worked perfectly fine with my LG TV remote. On the other hand getting it to turn down I had to grab the included remote which is so small can always keep track of it. It did it’s job in the sense of conversion but the volume controls or trash.
