Atlas of the Civil War: A Complete Guide to the Tactics and Terrain of Battle

As I will be visiting some of the Civil War battlefields this year, I've been trying to find maps of the battlefields (preferably in colour) showing the topography (i.e. battlefields in 3D). This proved very difficult until I chanced on this book. I couldn't have wished for a better. It is a large format book and every other page is filled with a coloured map. Some are topograhical, some are diagrammatic, showing troop movements. Some ,even, are copies of actual battlefield maps. The alternate pages describe what is happening on the maps. Even these are only about half filled by text, the remainder of each page being filled with contemporary photographs, engravings or paintings. If you want a sumptuous book, this is it ( it's a bit heavy to take as a guidebook though!).

Husband say this book is brilliant - maybe not got anything that he doesn’t know already (as he has a vast collection of civil war books) but the content, layout and text is superb!

If you are familiar with the American Civil War this will help you visualise some of armies movements leading up to the major events and battles. It makes it clearer how close the southern army came to Washington, but also the wider range the war took across the States.Backed up with more in depth knowledge of the war, this set of maps and chronological events helps bring it into clearer focus for those not overly familiar with the topography of the USA..

My daughter, who is going to University to study history, loves this.
