Powerful, long-lasting light from a stout, small, versatile device
SUBOOS Gen 2 Ultimate LED Rechargeable Tent Lantern and 5200mAh Power BankThis is a very bright, lightweight, versatile lighting device with impressive battery power and excellent 'build' quality. Its features and characteristics are explored below in some detail.Although this lantern was designed to light a tent (even a large one) very comfortably and is built to be water resistant enough to endure a rainstorm, it also can serve as an inexpensive and bright emergency substitute for house interior lighting during a multi-hour power outage. Unlike barrel-shaped lanterns built to be carried around, this was designed to be set or hung in place (but it can easily be carried around to provide light across large areas indoors or outside).Opening it unleashes surprising brightness. It uses 12 white and 3 red LEDs for 280 lumens on high (white light) and 100 lumens on medium (white light). This lantern apparently is Suboos 'Gen 2' version, so named because it uses a newer LED technology called 'Surface Mounted Devices' ('SMD') (LEDs), which allows it to produce more light from a smaller cluster of LEDs but with reduced battery consumption. Shipped with two 2,600 mAh batteries, the lantern's data sheet says that this power bank (5,200 mAh in total) will provide light on high for 7 hours and for 18 hours on medium. In red 'night vision' mode, the batteries reportedly power it for 100 hours or more.Details, capabilities, and features:To double-check the Suboos data sheet, I used a camera's internal light meter to do a rough side-by-side trial of this lantern against the Suboos Ultimate Lantern, which is rated at 180 lumens on its high setting. The light meter indicated this unit projected about 1.5 times more light on a wall when both devices were stationed at the same distance (about 48") from the wall. (And that's consistent with the data sheets for the two products, as 280 lumens at this device's high setting is ~55% more than 180 lumens for the other lantern on high.)After dark, wandering around the house carrying this lantern showed that it could adequately and comfortably illuminate even large rooms. The light cover is frosted, and so disseminates an even, non-glaring light.Suboos products, in our experience, reflect careful attention to design functionality and to quality construction, with stout casing materials and attention to weather protection. The manufacturer data sheet says this lantern meets water resistance IPX5 standards -- the industry standard for resisting a sustained low-pressure water jet spray, or, in other words, protected against that as well as dripping water, water splashes from any direction, and heavy rain). The dual rechargeable 18650 button-top batteries (2,600 mAh each) are delivered with a proper 'storage' charge (about 75% to 80% of full charge). Because these are wired into the lantern in parallel (not in series), the lantern can operate with only one battery installed (or in use) -- but having them in parallel makes the additional mAh available (for the full 5,200 mAh). With proper care, Lithium-ion 18650s can be recharged many, many times. These dual batteries also enable the lantern to serve as an emergency USB-device charging center. For that, the lantern includes a standard USB output port, located inside the weather-protected battery compartment. For devices that use a USB 'standard' to USB 'micro' cable for charging, the same cable that is used to charge the lantern (included with the lantern) can be used to charge their device. For those whose devices require other cables that terminate in a standard USB output port connector, any such cable can link to the lantern's charging port. (The lantern's batteries hold power sufficient to charge most smartphones with 2,000 - 3,000 mAh batteries fully at least once -- check your phone's battery mAh capacity to see how many full and partial charges the lantern could provide for it.)The multi-function switch cycles from 'off' through high and medium brightness, then to red mode, and then 'off', and it also serves as an LED-illuminated charging indicator, flashing while charging and turning solid red when the device is fully charged. When the lantern is being used as a power source to deliver USB power to an external device, the button glows blue.Weighing just under 9 ounces (with batteries installed), this unit is basically circular and relatively thin -- about 4.25" in diameter and about 2" in depth. The hanging ring is made of substantial metal, and 5 different 'click stops' for the ring allow the lantern to be angled to point straight down, or straight out to either side, or at a 45-degree angle to either side. Conclusion:Our household has included Suboos lighting devices for several years because of the consistent high quality of their products. This lantern appears to maintain that tradition. We purchased four of them -- two as donations for a local emergency shelter center (to replace antiquated massive and relatively dim battery-draining lanterns they had) and two for our own house, as emergency interior area backup lights for our regular mains-power interruptions (which occur in our area at least 3 or 4 times each year). The next time our house goes dark (and we know it will), we look forward to clicking these on immediately, confident that as a Suboos product they will work reliably, and that we will have good room lighting for many hours.

Pretty solid little design
I like that it has a little sealed hatch to swap out standard rechargeable battery cells. I wish the red light mode had a dimmer but all in all a solid little light.

Very bright!
Awesome Light!I bought this to use in our canopy tent while camping—mainly for mealtimes and playing cards. Although I haven’t taken it on a trip yet, I tested it in a completely dark room at home, and it worked perfectly! This little light lit up the entire room, so I’m confident it’ll be more than enough for our camping needs. I can already tell it’s going to be one of my favorite camping accessories.

Nearly perfect for hanging in tents, screen houses, and shelters
Likes:+ Directs all of its light in a wide downward flood rather than out to the sides+ Uses standard 18650 button-top batteries+ Hangs easily with the included clip, and it can be angled 45 degrees+ Lightweight even with two batteries+ Compact+ Low priceDislikes:- Powers on to the brightest setting- On/off button could be easier to find by feel- Only takes button-top 18650 cells, not flat-topsWe just got back from a camping trip where we used one of these lights hung from the top of our screen house over a picnic table and another one in our tent. We mostly used it at the medium setting in the screen house, which was bright enough to play cards or read or prepare food. The lowest setting was great for the tent. This is the best small hanging light we've used and it's nearly perfect for camping. Our one complaint is that the light always powers on to the brightest setting, which is the opposite of what you want for a tent light. For nighttime use in a tent with people potentially sleeping, it should start at the lowest setting. It's also annoying for the user to be temporarily blinded when powering it on in the middle of the night. Another downside worth mentioning is the power button. It's small and located in a spot that takes some fumbling in the dark to find. I think if the button was located on the back, it would be easier to find by feel.

perfect light for hanging on a tripod for night time shooting
I like that is is small, uses 18650 batteries and came with two, to turn on the red mode, all that needs to be done is press and hold the power button until the red light comes on. The version 1 light which I also have, made you turn on the white light first and the n switch to red, this model can go straight to red. Two of the pics are taken in night mode and makes the light appear much brighter than it is. The third pic was not taken in night mode to give an idea of true brightness. I also like that thw light can be used as a power bank.
