Q: Are these sharp enough to square up some channelling?

When they are new, yes. I use them for squaring old wall socket rebates. However they may need to be periodically reground of course.

Q: Will these split thin steel?

Possible , however they are for use on plaster, brick , mortar , concrete. If thin steel needs cutting then use tin snips.

Q: Would these be good for splitting slate?

No! where i have seen slate split they have used 4 inch bolsters. These bolsters are thinner than standard bolsters being only about 2mm thick but 100mm wide. The yellow chisels will split slate in all directions, OK for cutting a slot up a block wall but not slate. My opinion

Q: Would this be an appropriate tool for cutting difficult edges of sticky back plastic? Stanley knife drags it.

I would say no, a good sharp large kitchen knife is better I found.
