Phonics Stories "Frog on a log" and other tales
My daughter is in Kindergarten but is probably considered an advanced beginner in reading. She enjoyed the book "Fox on a Box" so I purchased this set. She has not read any of the stories yet but after looking through the book I would say these stories would be a bit difficult for her just yet but still look very engaging and better than a lot of the other beginning reading stories available. She enjoyed not only reading the "Fox on a Box" story but also the lift the flap surprises behind some of the pages. This collection also includes the same type of lift the flap surprises. The books included in this collection are as follows:Fat cat on a matHen's pensFrog on a logTed's shedShark in the parkMouse moves houseI think this collection is worth the price since you get 6 books in 1.

Wish I had box set, rather than all stories in one book
I bought this book mostly as practice for my preschooler who is learning to read. Some of the content is really perfect for her pre-K reading level. But unfortunately, while some of the story is just right for her reading level, suddenly other content in the same story jumps to way over her reading ability. But I can't get her to read the easy pages when she knows she's about to get stumped by the more difficult stuff.I suspect that by the time she finishes Kindergarten, she'll be reading all these stories quite well. While she's getting there, these stories might offer some appropriate reading practice. And she already loves the stories so hopefully she'll enjoy reading practice with these fun stories. My kids really like the characters and their stories. I don't think they're particularly special but the kids are really fond of them. They'll actually ask for "Hen's Pens" as a bedtime story and as soon as we're reading one, they want to read the other.I think it would be preferable to have each story as it's own paperback in a boxed set, rather than bound together in an inch-thick hardbound book. Also, something about the binding and the page cutting and the fact that every other page has a flap that folds in makes the pages all jagged and awkward to turn. That's kind of a weird complaint but it makes the book sort of annoying to hold and read.

Great book for young children - find the duck on every page!
We got our first Usborne Phonics book when our daughter was about 20 months old. She loved the simple, rhyming story and lifting the flaps on the pages. It became even more of a favorite when she realized the duck that she spotted on a couple pages was actually hiding on every page. This collection was a great way to get more of the great phonics stories to add to our home library. The stories are simple and fun, the characters a little silly - which our daughter loves- and it's one that I can read over and over as an adult and not get tired of or find annoying. Our daughter isn't reading yet, but most of the words are short and simple, I can see this being a good beginner reading book. The only issue I have is that because this is 6 stories bound together in one book, I usually have to read all 6 stories one after the other (if I said 2 books then bedtime, after this one is finished my daughter tells me "that was one" so I usually have to read one more). As the book is so enjoyable this is not much of an issue.

Fun!
We originally bought a couple of the stories in this series (Shark in the Park, Goose on the Loose); they were such a hit that I decided to buy this larger collection. We read it from cover to cover almost every night before bed. The cadences vary around the rhyming structure, so it's not like every sentence is the same. My two year old twins parrot the phrases back to me with gusto. They also enjoy pointing out different illustrated elements on each page (butterflies, snails, trees, apples, water, et cetera). Their favorites are Frog on a Log and Hen's Pens! Excellent for early reading preparation. A few pages include a fold-out portion, like an added lift-the-flap action. These are a hit with the kids, but ultimately make the book more likely to get torn by eager hands - hence my 4-star rating.

Great book BUT...
I could give 5 stars on this book, the stories are excellent, great for young ones and great for early learners. My son is 5 and learning to read and the words are perfect for him to practice on! The BUT: I bought this book as well as Fat Cat on a Mat and other stories., and all the stories (6) of Frog on the log and other stories are already in the Fat cat and other stories book (12)!! Bit of a waste, i thought they were different stories! So for almost the same price and a CD extra, Fat Cat and other stories is a better value!
