A Benedictine Reader: 530-1530 (Volume 275) (Cistercian Studies Series)
E**E
Readable but comprehensive
This book tells the story of monasticism in western Christianity by taking readers to new translations of historic source material. It is surprisingly very readable and the stories are fantastic. There is a growing interest in monastic life, not only among Catholics, but also in the Lutheran and Anglican (Episcopal) communities, so this book may have a broader audience than Cistercian Publications originally intended. Father Hugh Feiss OSB, the editor of the book and one of many contributors to it, is a Benedictine scholar with firmly grounded roots , including coaching high school football. The book tells tales of many monks whose reach included spiritual pursuits and ties to life in the "real world" as well.
