HEXBUG VEX Robotic Arm

Got this for my 14yo son for Christmas. He had a great time putting it together and seeing how all the little parts fit. My father and I both dropped in to assist with certain more difficult parts but it was easily done and my son is still using it months later.

My kid is 8. He had to work hard at it, but was super excited as it came together.I left him to his own devices and only a couple of times helped with finding a piece.

同社のVEX ROBOTICSシリーズからは様々なモデルが販売されていますが、これはRobotic Arm(ロボットアーム)のモデルとなっています。部品数は350以上となっていますが、そのうち200個ほどは、パーツとパーツをつなぐコネクタやワッシャー等の細かなもので、主要なパーツはそれほど多くありませんので、組み立て作業は、レゴと同じく文章が一切なく、すべて図で示されている説明書をきちんと見て行うとそれほど難しくはなく、レゴテクニックが好きな我が家の小学校低学年の息子は、何度も説明書を確認しながら慎重に組み立てても、2時間もかからずに完成させていました。ロボットアームの動作部分は4箇所あり、まずアームの土台は360度自由に回転できます。アームの動きは、上下方向と伸縮方向にそれぞれ独立したノブを回すことで、おおむね25cm程度の範囲で動かすことができます。また、アームの爪も、独立したノブを回すことで、180度開いた状態から全閉まで動作可能ですので、それぞれのノブを操作することで、自由にロボットアームを操作することができ、スムーズな動作を楽しめます。この製品とレゴテクニックの比較ですが、レゴのブロックは弾力があり簡単に折れたり欠けたりはしませんが、この製品の材質はしなやかさがなく、パーツに無理な力を掛けると簡単に折れてしまう印象で、コネクタパーツでも、はめ込むときに無理な負荷がかからないように組み立てないとすぐに割れてしまいますので注意が必要です。うちの子は3つほど折ってしまいましたが、コネクタは多少多めに入っていますので、問題なく完成させるとはできました。また、レゴテクニックは細かなパーツをユニットごとに作って、最後に全体をくみ上げるというコンセプトのモデルが多いですが、この製品は主要なパーツがそれぞれ大きいので、今どこを作っているのかわかりやすく、完成時の状態をイメージしながら作れるので、比較的低学年の子供でも簡単に組み立てる事ができると思います。なお、パッケージにはこのロボットアーム以外にも、同社のWebサイトから組み立て図をダウンロードすることでサソリとヘリコプターにも作り替えることができるとありますが、これらモデルについては組み立て工程も単純なうえに、動作を楽しむことが全くできないただの置物なので、作り変える意味はないと思いました。このモデルについては、ノブを回す回転運動が歯車へと伝わり、様々な動作に変換されてロボットアームが動く仕組みをわかりやすく学べる製品になっていますので、メカ好きの子供へのプレゼントにおすすめですね。

My son loves it!

I got this as a gift for my birthday and worked with my 4yr old to build it. It's definitely an adult toy (or older kid). There are some extremely tiny pieces, but by the end of the build my 4yr old was able slide the little washers and gears together like a pro.There were no issues with the build. The instructions were tough, but as long as you pay attention they had no issues or errors. All parts were in the box along with more than plenty replacements in case you lost anything. There was even some flat pieces left over to make a "crate" that my son picks up with the arm.The arm doesn't move my forcing it. Which is good, he's forced to learn how to make it move by turning the gears. I can see the gears turning in his head as he watch the gears move with the knobs.I highly recommend this product as a parent/child build. I can't wait to get more and am now interested in the Vex Robotics challenges they have!
