Works like a charm.
I used to have an all-aluminum cherry/olive pitter of similar design that I used for years. It worked fine, although it could be finicky. After it broke, I used a plastic one with a push-button. I did not much care for it, since it was even more finicky than the aluminum one. I even tried a 6-at-a-time pitter, but I didn't love that one either. That's when I tried this one. This is by far the best one I have ever used. I no longer have to worry about putting the cherry in in exactly the right position. Its funnel design does that for me, so that the pit cleanly pops out nearly every time (I haven't yet tried it on olives). Is it sturdy? It feel sturdy, but ask me again in a few years. My one (very mild) criticism is that the little tab that holds it partially closed moves into place on its own while I'm using it, so I have to keep pushing it back in. Not a big deal, in context, for something that otherwise works this well.

If you have cherry trees, you'll want the perfect pitter!
I make homemade marachino cherries, in large batches, until cherry season is over. This is so much nicer, and easier on the hand, then my ancient pitter.Easy to get it sparkling clean, afterwards.

It gets the job done, but…
So, I caved and bought this because when you find yourself with about 4lbs of cherries because they were on sale for $2.97/lb, using a chopstick and an empty Modelo bottle just won’t cut it. It’s not like I did pit at least 2lbs of cherries with an empty Modelo bottle and a chopstick, after trying to cut the cherries in half and pit them like an avocado…you really don’t think I’d do that, do you?ANYWAYS. This one looked sturdier than some of the other offerings on Amazon, and I liked the addition of a splash guard. There is a bit of a learning curve with this pitter; if you don’t get it centered on the pit, it won’t cleanly pit your cherry. You’ll either get A) a cherry that is indefinitely stuck and doesn’t go anywhere. B) a cherry you think is indefinitely stuck that suddenly becomes a projectile object into your bowl of cherry pits. Or C) a cherry you think is indefinitely stuck that suddenly explodes into your bowl of cherry pits while taking half the cherry with it.On Cherry #2 (Cherry number two of the day, not pound two of two pounds of cherries I was trying to pit), the splash guard fell off while using it on a cherry. When I picked it up, it has a small crack in it. It still fit back on, but I’m not confident it will last long-term. The splash guard fell off several more times and I had to keep putting it back on. Additionally, as you will see in photo two, it did not prevent me from looking like I just left the scene of a crime once I was done. A pretty decent amount of cherry juice still managed to splash everywhere. No cherries were harmed during the making of this review.HOWEVER. I will say that this did pit a huge amount of cherries in a fraction of the time it would take a person that is not me to pit the same amount of cherries over an empty Modelo bottle with a chopstick. So I’m satisfied. I like speed and efficiency when it comes to pitting cherries.Oh, and it’s dishwasher safe. Yay!

Fabulous Pitter!
I gifted this cherry pitter to my daughter, after she shared how time-consuming and staining it was to pit cherries for a pie. Here’s what my busy daughter, mother of three, said, “ Oh! I keep forgetting to tell you! That cherry pitter is amazing! I can’t believe I’ve been eating cherries with the pits in them for 37 years. Insane! I’ll be buying more cherries now haha. The kids love them too!”

easy way to pit cherries and olives
I LOVE cherries and olives and this is by far and away the best pitter i have found. There is a small round ring on one side for the food item, it is easy to squeeze and the pit comes right out. nice simple design and can be washed in the dishwasher.

Does the job - Need strong grip
I bought this to pit some olives. There is a learning curve with this. It took me a few tries to get the olive in the right position, but once I did, it worked. Some of the olives required a little more pressure to remove the pits, but I was able to get it. (Note: I am almost 80 years old so my grip is not very strong)The big issue I had was the cap (pit container) kept popping off. I eventually just stopped using it. That is why I gave it a 3 star. It works fine, but requires more strength that I have and the pit container kept falliing off.
