Awesome Snake Science!: 40 Activities for Learning About Snakes (2) (Young Naturalists)

I've been working with children and reptiles in environmental education centers for quite some time now, and have snake breeders and herpotlogists in the family. Even with our combined experience, we've always struggled to find any truly useful snake activities for educational use. This book contains absolutely fantastic activities that demonstrate the unique characteristics of a snake without adding any undue fear to a child's already tainted perception of this often misunderstood reptile. Unlike other activity books, I would say at least 80% of the activities found within this book are useable and entertaining on a level most children (and adults) can appreciate. Not to mention, the activities explore nearly every snake thing I could think of in a very hand-on manner, allowing me to offer visitors to our center an immersive educational experience that will fit most learning styles.

We bought Awesome Snake Science as a gift for a 9 year old boy who has dreams of being a herpetologist. Each activity in the book has a description of what each snake feature is like, why it's important, and then the activity mimics that feature. Some of the activities are better than others. Some deal with physical characteristics, like the spine or jaws, some with snake handling. My sons, 6 and 9 have been reading it together and planning their summer activities. Thankfully, for me, no snakes are required to enjoy this book, so we've been able to stave off getting a real snake for another year.

Black and white pictures in a book about snakes? Raises eyebrows. This was intended as a gift, but I'm embarrassed to gift this to anyone. This "book" literally feels like about 59 two sided pages were printed on a black and white printer and bound together by a colorful cover.

We got this to expand our nature homeschool library. It has a lot of fun information that we can use for several years. Worth getting for sure.

Our 4 year old daughters favorite animal is snakes. She loves the book and keeps it close to her at all times !

This book had some great ideas for simply explaining the odd things about snakes, such as "How DO they fit that big animal into such a small mouth?" My students enjoyed the snake eggs candy/cookies. I learned quite a bit about snakes with this book.

Good book but I would not expect having all the content in black and white. Children are disappointed :(
