There are 5 categories of PFDs, but most paddlers should use a Type III or V USCG-approved PFD. Type I: Offshore Life Jackets. These are geared for rough or remote waters where rescue may take a while. Though bulky, they have the most buoyancy, a bright color and can turn most unconscious people face up in the water.Type II: Near-shore Vests. Calm inland waters, where a fast rescue is likely, is the intent of these PFDs. They will turn some unconscious wearers to the face-up position but not all of them. They are bulky, but less so than Type I.Type III: Flotation Aids. These are suitable for most padders where there is a chance for a quick rescue. They offer freedom of movement and the most comfort for continuous wear. Type IIIs are designed so wearers can put themselves in a face-up position, but they may have to tilt their head back to avoid being face down in water.Type IV: Throwable Devices. Cushions or ring buoys are designed to be thrown to someone in trouble and provide backup to a PFD. They are not for nonswimmers, rough waters or the unconscious. The USCG does not require these for canoes or kayaks.Type V: Special-use Devices. These are specialized PFDs for specific activities. To be acceptable by the USCG, they must be used for the activity specified on the label. Varieties include kayaking, waterskiing, windsurfing, hybrid vests and deck suits.

I am 5'5 close to 300lbs and can't swim what is the best life jacket for me?

Hello, I am a big dude also. I am 6'2" @ 300 lbs. This vest fits me great and still has room to be let out even more if I decide to grab a cheesecake on the way to the lake. I use this PDF while kayaking . . once I have it on I forget I am wearing it. It is very comfy, and is not restrictive at all. My only complaint is that it gets warm while paddling. BUT, I am in north Texas . . so it is usually over 90 and humid. So I would imagine even a 'high end' pdf would feel warm. Go ahead and give this one a try if you are on the fence. You can always try it and return it if you aren't happy with it. Two chubby thumbs up from this big dude!

Has anyone used this life vest for stand up paddle boarding? Does it interfere with paddling?

I have used this for stand up paddle boarding. It's quite comfortable when paddling, but I have found that it makes getting on the paddle board from deep water slightly more challenging because it is a little bit bulker in the front and requires you to have slightly more arm strength than slimmer life vests. Given that, I still can get up on the board it just takes a bit more effort my daughter on the other hand is slimmer and doesn't seem to have as much difficulty getting back on the board.

It is so comfortable!

I purchased a different "universal" kayak jacket from same manufacturer..it was horrible! It rode up around my chin and the back of my neck when I sat down. (I am 5'1" 125lbs) I immediately sent it back and purchased this one in XS/Small. It is such a game changer for comfort! It doesn't ride up and has a front zip pocket with whistle. (Pocket not big enough for my cell phone but thats not a big deal). The adjustable shoulder straps and open sides make the fit perfect! Easy to move and row without bulk! If you are on the fence as to which jacket to buy, dont hesitate on this one. Highly recommend!

Great but orange is not orange

Bought this for kayaking. Tried this on in a store so I knew what size to buy. Glad I did as I would of gotten the M/L if I hadn’t tried on as the X-Small/Small is what I needed (I’m 160 lbs) Fit is great. Very comfortable. The store did not have the grey & orange as I wanted it to match my kayak thus the reasoning I ordered on Amazon. Slightly disappointed as it’s more of a red than orange & doesn’t match my kayak. The orange is not what it appears in the picture shown. Should of read other reviews to know this. Keeping it though to avoid the exchanging hassle. The life vest itself though is perfect!

Works very well for kayaking moving rivers and streams

When I received this life jacket I thought it looked bulky but after kayaking the Current River in Missouri for 2 full days I was very pleased with it. It's very comfortable, lightweight and I had full range of motion in it. The high back allows me to sit in my kayak seat comfortably without the life jacket riding up. Seems to run big. At 5'3 and 135 lb I had the xs/sm almost fully cinched up. It also fit my daughter at 5'7 150 lb with plenty of room to spare.

Vests for our first Kayaks!

These were the first life vest we ever bought. My sister has had a kayak for years and recommended to us that we look at the style that's thinner over the shoulders. I put mine on and I still have full range of motion with my arms which will be great for paddling. We have rented kayaks before and the rental vests have always been uncomfortable.

Great life jacket

I really like this life jacket. It is comfortable and was easy to adjust to fit securely. I sat in my kayak with it and there wasn't any problem between it and the seat back. It seems like it is well made and should last a long time.

Second purchase!

This is the best PFD! I upgraded from a regular cheap boating style PFD about 3 or 4 years ago and got this one. A couple weeks ago, I lost it during a kayak adventure. I hope someone found it and is making good use of it! I decided to go to REI and Dicks and try some new ones on, but none of them were as nice. I hopped on Amazon a found this one again.The Onyx is easy to adjust and has a nice high back so it doesn't catch on my kayak seat. It's also heavily vented to keep you cool and lightweight. The colors are stylish with reflective accents.This version is slightly different than my first one. The folds on the front have mesh in them and it makes it fit even better than the first one over my chest.The price is amazing! I tried on similar PFDs that were more than $100 and ended up with the Onyx!

works great and fits great wore for 9 hours

I looked that this life jacket over the winter and finally purchased before my first kayak fishing trip, it arrived the day before and i adjusted it properly. I am 5'11'' and around 170 pounds and a small fit me perfect (and I read prior reviews that stated this also, so it helped. I love it and our first float of the year ended up being 9 hours and I wore it the whole time! can't wait to get my son one soon. thanks
