American Horticultural Society Plant Propagation: The Fully Illustrated Plant-by-Plant Manual of Practical Techniques
This reference book has already become one of the most valuable books on our bookshelf. We happen to be professional gardeners but certainly not professional nurserymen. We have several books on plant propagation but none as useful as this. The photographs are very helpful and there are many of them. General techniques are very well explained, illustrated and organized, i.e., division, layering, seed sowing, cuttings, grafting, etc... but the detailed coverage of individual plants is where this book shines. I suppose a more professional reference would provide 'strike-rate' percentages for the variety of propagation methods suggested for each plant but one can still get a sense of the best means of propagating for the particular genera that one is working with. We happen to have a greenhouse and a very large selection of plants to begin with so this book fits our needs perfectly. Professional nurserymen would probably look to the Ball reference guides (and others that I'm not familiar with)for plant propagation on a commercial scale, but for the serious amateur this is the "Joy of Cooking" of plant propagation. (for those that don't cook, I mean to say this is the bible for basics). If you're looking to increase your stock of plants and have the set-up to do it you really ought to have this book...maybe two copies; one for the bedside table, another for the workspace.

I'm really glad I ordered this book
I'm really glad I ordered this book! In each section it describes many propagation techniques in detail for that group of plants and then gives you a huge listing of plants and which of those techniques to use with which plant.I just started to grow Dahlias this year and there's a whole section on them!I should also mention that some listings for some plants are quite brief or even just footnotes, but those are for less common species, and when taken in context with other plants on the page is still quite useful.Large format with excellent photography.Just the info on seed sowing depth made this purchase worthwhile for me. An easy five stars.

Informative
The book had some wear on the cover but otherwise was intact. I feel the information was a little out dated but still useful. Definitely not worth some of the advertised prices of over $100! I love DK books.

A Much Used, Dependable Reference
I bought this book about 4 years ago. I refer to it continuously. It has helped me so much that I once found myself describing how to propagate plants to a friend and he was puzzled about where I gained such expertise. It is unusual to acquire such know how just from referring to a book. This book clearly and concisely lays out various approaches to propagation that sticks with you. If you apply its methods, you will get results and improve your gardening skills. I've successfully propagated various types of plants and my confidence in doing so has grown significantly over time.
