Memorization for basic vocabulary and phrases
Straight forward book to learn vocabulary and phrases . The word is listed then the symbol . It does not give direction on each individual picture how the symbol should be written. It gives you a pictograph under the symbol to help with memorization. There is a one page introduction that explains the writing system. The book has basic vocabulary and phrases. This is not a workbook. There is an index located in the back of English words to look up.I do speak two language but Japanese is not one of them. However I do dabble in learning words and phrases in other language and this book was fun.

Nice Reference Book
The media could not be loaded. Good for beginners and up. I like how the book is organized by the meaning of the kanji rather than the level like the other kanji book I have. Each kanji gives the number of strokes and words that use the kanji. The cute pictures are also nice for memory.

Perfect
8th grader who is just starting to learn Japanese loves it. It has a ton of words to learn and a lot of information along with helpful illustrations to help learners recognize new symbols and letters.

Accessible book for learning Kanji
The concept of using symbols associated with a word for teaching is not new. This book is more suited for those who are more visually inclined. However, I do feel that the symbols and drawings aren't always the most representative of the word. That's the downside of the book. The upside is there are 1000 kanji characters to learn. Each comes with the English translation, pronunciation hints in romanji, example vocabulary that uses the same word, and also a reference number to the word in the New Nelson Japanese-English Character Dictionary. A CD is included for pronunciation practice.Just like any language, it takes time to learn. The best way to learn is still through using the language and writing.

Not for Me
A few things to say... I love the concept, and for very simple learning, this is a pretty good product. However, the little things have really made this product less than ideal for me. There is no in-depth learning in the book, the mnemonic devices are often a stretch of the imagination to say the least, there is no designation for the ON and KUN readings, no stroke order for the characters, and no furigana/kana to aid in pronunciation (which, if you're learning/mastering the use of kana as well as kanji, is VERY VERY helpful!) I almost hesitate to give 2 stars instead of 3, but for me, it just is not a good fit. I literally read and studied three pages worth of kanji, then moved onto free online learning with much better results and haven't touched the book since. Having said that, I'm sure it would be fantastic for very early learners or young learners.

Too much distractions to actually learn
I had high hopes for this book but not liking it at all. For someone who has struggles learning and ADD, the random images they put behind each kanji makes it extremely difficult to take in the info along with the random notes they add to try and "help" you remember each one. I guess this will be sitting on my shelf, I'll have to get a different book that has clear presentations of each kanji with the meanings.
