YAKIMA - SKS Lock Cores for Yakima Car Rack System Components

Replaced the standard locking mechanism on my OEM Jeep Wrangler Cross Bars (Which can be unlocked using only a flat-blade screwdriver). Removal and Replacement was a breeze. Remove the retaining snapring, then separate the "locking mechanism" from the locking detent. Install the SKS core with the detent, reinstall the snapring, and you're set! I recommend

I bought these to better secure my adjustable Mopar crossbars on my Jeep JL Wrangler. This is a direct replacement for the plastic flathead cores, and the install literally took 5 minutes for all four covers. I mostly wanted some added security for the rack and my solar panel mounted to it. This won’t stop a prepared thief, but it is more than enough for my situation. The extra keys are a huge plus, I put them on my keychain, my wife’s keychain and also kept one in our safe at home after installing. Really glad WranglerForums posts let people know these work for the OEM racks.

Geeat addition to any SKS compatible Yakima rack. These secure the outermost rack grip to the car crossbars. The kit comes with two lock cores, a master installer key and two keys for the locks (one for each Yakima rack front and back) - its a little confusing when ordering because they want to know the number of sets, so I selected two thinking I was getting 2 kits with 2 cores, but it was one kit with 2 cores - I had to irder another set since I was securing 4 kayak racks to the crossties. Installation was pretty easy, although you do have to jiggle the cores a little to get them to seat in the rack locking hole. They work great at securing your racks and the keys are universal, so they work with any lock. Great value for the function they serve.

Good locks expensive though

I used this on a Yakima rocket box and it unlocked one core but the other wouldn’t budge. The cores fit great and it now locks/unlocks. The “control” key bends kinda easy, so use caution.

Yakima SKS lock cores for Yakima SKS-equipped bars. Perfect fit, naturally. I appreciate the included control key. I see some complaints about these locks being too flimsy. Let me provide some perspective: I have a set of Yak bars that I got from a vehicle in a junkyard. The bars were locked onto the junker, but I still got them without having to break the Yakima towers (the same can't be said for the junker's roof rails). When I got the bars home, I drilled-out the cores and replaced them with a set ordered here on Amazon. So the bars can be removed even if they're locked. You have to dismantle or destroy the car's roof rack to do it, but it can be done. But how many thieves out there really want to make that much noise and movement for that much time? Sure, you can use a claw hammer to ruin the tower lock directly and get the bar off, but a thief isn't going to want to sell broken bars. The best situation is to get 4 lock cores and lock both sides of each bar. That would make it a major headache to steal the bars. If you stick with just one core per bar, put one lock on each side of your roof; for example, lock the front bar on the left side of the roof and the rear bar on the right side of the roof. That will force a thief to take twice as much time to pry the bars off.

Bought these for my Jeep Wrangler Mopar roof cross bars and they work perfectly in place of the plastic cylinder lock and at almost half the price of other sellers. Thanks!

I think it stinks that these are so expensive and they don’t just come with the expensive racks. That being said, they are really easy to install and work the way they are supposed to right out of the box. Overall I am happy with them, just wish I didn’t have to buy them separately! I have them installed on my JayLow kayak racks and it gives me peace of mind because otherwise the racks can just be removed by anyone without needing tools. I don’t know how heavy duty these are but they will keep the honest people out!

Ordered these for my Big Stack kayak carrier. Easy to fit, and does the job neatly. Dropped one star only because I really feel these are expensive, and should be included in the cost of the carrier rather than having to order them separately. Wasn't aware when I ordered the carrier that it came without locks. Other than that, they seem decent quality and work well.
