Good for information and inspiration: features a lot of commercial art and profiles of artists
My daughter is a junior in high school and wants to study Illustration in college. As her mother, I want her to pursue what she's drawn to, but also to make a living, so this book definitely caught my eye.I thought it would be a pretty dry book featuring ways that designers can make money in today's world. The Foreword addresses the fast-paced changes in form and content, and says that the book has been totally reworked and redone from the 4th edition. The next section is a Glossary of job opportunities, which lists job divisions, terms that might be used interchangeably for "in house design department" and job titles, as well as new job titles. Then there are very brief tips on places to seek jobs and network, what you need an an optimum portfolio, and how important that first email or letter can be. That small section is only 4 pages of the 325 page book.Another interesting section, applicable to high school students or college students looking to pursue a graduate degree is a 2 page directory of colleges, divided into Undergrad degrees, 2 year programs, and Graduate programs. There is no more information than the name of the college and the website, but based on the extensive research we've done into undergraduate illustration programs, all of the top schools are listed. Then the book is divided into sections: Graphic Design, which starts with 20 pages featuring interviews with with 5 designers and lots of images as well, then a section on whether one should start a studio or work for someone else, again featuring profiles on artists with examples of their work. The next section is about different genres of design, paying particular attention to letters and typeface, logos, books, editorial design, illustration design and more.Another section on digital design deals with interface, apps and e-commerce.The book is probably 50% photos and images, which was a huge surprise for me, but is interesting and inspirational, for those interested in the industry or those curious about how they can make their love for and talent in art as a viable career. This book was better than I expected, and I highly recommend it.
