Q: How long do you soak the sponge in the planet wave gap guitar humidifier? The sponge doesn't seem to soften.

It takes about 30 mins. But put something over it to make sure it is completly submerged in water.

Q: How much water do you add?

I squish it around under the faucet until it's completely saturated, then shake off the excess drops so it won't drip I side the guitar.

Q: any reason not to use for a classical guitar

These are the only humidifiers I would use on my classical guitars They are good! Just make sure you wet the sponge with purified water (you can buy at every grocery store) and not sink water as the minerals will cause the sponge to mildew

Q: Can you hang the guitar on the wall with this in it?

You could, but it wouldn't be very effective. I keep mine in a closed hard case and am able to maintain the humidity level around 50 in dry west Texas. It's dryer in winter. I have come to the conclusion that the only way I can hang, or leave my vintage acoustic guitars out on stands or hanging is in a humidity/ temperature controlled room. Until then it's in the case with one of these soundhole humidifiers.
