will this desk work of a high school student?

Yes! I’m 5’6” and weigh 225#. There are 4” between the tops of my thighs and the bottom of the desk, and 3” on each side of my legs. Unless the student is very tall they will be able to use this desk.

I use a computer chair. The desk was bought to extend my space at my computer desk.

What is the lowest height and the fully extended height?

Hi Kelley,I'm not exactly sure about the full height extension. I'm 5'8" and sitting down it feels it extends just over 5'. My little brother who is 4'8" sits at the same height and his feet do not touch the ground. Most extension is 5'1" at most. Lowest height is most probably 4'.

can the top be removed/replaced?

The top appears to be screwed on to the "drawer/storage" area. I would guess that yes, the top can be removed. You would have to contact the company that makes this product to see if you can buy just a top. Try calling 1-866-941-1811; this was the number that was packaged with the unit but it was listed as the number to call only if you discovered a missing or damaged part. Good luck.
