Differential Equations in 24 Hours: with Solutions and Historical Notes

Looks great on my Kindles. But, before you buy ... download a sample to your Kindle or Kindles. I downloaded the sample to my Kindle for PC with a 24 inch screen. Perfect. Downloaded a sample to my MacBook Pro with a 17 inch screen. Perfect again. These are my go to Kindles for technical work ( I also have iPad and phone Kindles). Your mileage may vary. DOWNLOAD THE SAMPLE FIRST.The book is divided into 24 chapters labeled Hours. In each chapter, the author does an amazing job of pushing aside all the dense formality that accompanies typical math texts and hits the target dead on. In each chapter, the subject is clear. One of the most difficult things to find in math books is clarity. This author hits it as well as any I have seen. Also, he continuously puts the differential equations in context with the physics that they describe. Definitely different than the usual dry "do it this way and someday you will find out why" approach that more formal math books use.As a text, the book has too few examples for my taste. But, that is easily remedied and does not detract from the book at all. And, I bought the book because I enjoyed the style, it was inexpensive and I could use an easy reference.This book should stand as a shining example for why colleges definitely overcharge for text books. This book would sell for $150 to $250 in a college bookstore if it were required for a class in Diff EQ. Not only is this book better than the course book I had in college, it is probably better than the ones sold today at outrageous prices.I trust that Dr. Imhoff teaches classes from this book and will be one of those professors that the students remember for decades afterwards.Five stars easy.

I've been out of school a while and wanted a refresher on diff-E. It did the job.

The book gives a good overview of undergraduate differential equations. If you are considering purchasing this item, I suggest that you buy the hard copy rather than the kindle version as I did. I found the electronic version to be an annoying and frustrating read. The equations are so small in size that they are nearly impossible for my aged eyes to read. After some fiddling around with the screen on my iPad, I was able to get the equations to display on a separate screen after a series of taps and swipes. The result of this was that the experience of reading the material was constantly interrupted as I had to stop and display almost every equation. I probably would have given this book a higher rating but for this limitation. In this age of sophisticated electronic publishing I expect a more user friendly product. Note the significant price difference between the paper and electronic version. I suspect it is due to the clumsy format of the kindle version.

Professor Imhoff's book is an extremely readable and compact review of differential equations. He covers the subject thoroughly, his problems are informative and the relative brevity is really welcome for someone who is looking for a good refresher.

This is a nice, non-technical presentation of the subject. Especially good for review.I will echo some other comments that the rendering of the equations is pretty bad on my Kindle. Turning it sideways can help but I have to use Zoom on the solutions.The problems are pretty simple and solving them gives a measure of success that keeps you motivated. It would be nice to have one or two more challenging problems at the end of each hour.

What I like about this book is how straight to the point it is. You get everything you would expect in an introductory level DE course and non of the fat. This makes for a great supplementary book if you are an undergrad taking DE or even if you are in grad school and need to refreshen your memory. Look elsewhere if you need a more deep look into DE's, thats not what this book is intended to be.

If you haven't had Algebra and Trig, Calculus, 1 2 and 3 it may be difficult to comprehend.

An extremely useful book as a first course in differenrisk equations. The concepts and ideas are clear, crisp and direct , without being bogged down in unnecessary details. The beginners and non- math majors would relsh the presentation. Service of Amazon is appreciated.- M N Baig
