Singer Upholstery Basics Plus: Complete Step-by-Step Photo Guide

Helpful
A great help for someone trying to repair or re-upholster a couch. I bought this (singer upholstry basic plus) and Upholstery Basics (Singer Sewing Reference Library) Singer Sewing Reference Library (Books). Between those two books, I had all I needed to understand and put new cushions into the covers of our couches seat.

I am going to reupholster the crap out of my furniture
I have several giant re-upholstery projects planned. My eyes are probably bigger than my stomach here, but I'm going to give it a shot. I'm going to slowly purchase the recommended tools. There's a great tool list at the beginning of the book and I'm keeping it in my truck so that I have it on me when I run to the home improvement store to get the items one at a time. The book goes over the tools, materials used in upholstery, and the basics of how to accomplish it. It goes over how to do reupholstering of antiques (using natural fibers, etc.), and how to make minor repairs to the frame. It's fairly comprehensive. I wouldn't say that you could go into business after reading the book, but the average person should be able to reupholster a basic chair with the help of this book. I imagine the more that you do it the better you'll get so that you'll be able to tackle larger projects and furniture over time.

Good resource
I purchased this book with the intention, of doing my own upholstery project, but, as a beginner, I found the explanations and the photos to be confusing at times (i understand that they can't have a photo for every step, but it would have made more sense to include photos of the more difficult steps). I signed up for an upholstery class and they used the Singer as our "textbook". In those conditions it was useful as a reference to augment what we were learning in the class. However, having now taken a class its apparent you would miss quite a bit of important information if you only used this book to complete upholstery projects. It's a good companion resource accompanied by a class or video.

Good book--informative. I liked it.
I bought it used--the condition was close to new--was well bound with heavy stock . It was shipped quickly and efficiently. I only needed it for one small project, and it had an example of something that was close to what I was doing. Found the instructions clear and fairly easy to follow, though some of the terminology was unfamiliar to me. I completed my project successfully. I did run across a book that had an example of something that was closer to what I was actually attempting while in a fabric store, but it was more then twice as expensive. Just read it in the store and it was a good supplement to what I was already doing.

Very useful book. I am in the middle of a complicated upholstery project and feel like I bit off more than I can chew. While there's plenty of free advice online, it's good to have a physical book to refer to and use for moral support as I blunder my way through this home project. I've been able to cobble together an understanding of the project through a combination of reupholstery projects they explain.

Not the "plus" Singer states
While this book IS more complete than Singer's Upholstery Basics, this is not the "textbook" I was hoping to find. I have been taking upholstery and wanted more. I wanted much more explanation as to why certain things are done. Like how to find where the stress points are on the fabric and how to make the cuts to relieve these stresses. They do go into a decent explanation of springs, but they don't really tie springs. They do it in a very "cheap and dirty" way. Another thing about both of Singers books is that they spend too much space with projects. One thing I found with upholstery is: every piece is different! I don't care about someone else's projects.I want to know everything a master would tell his/her apprentice. This book is definitely not the master.

Great reference to have in the shop
Classic reference book for upholstery novices and seasoned veterans as a refresher when you haven't done something in a while. We all know every person learns differently, and I find keeping reference books in the shop helps interns a lot. If you are trying to teach a technique you know well to someone, and they just aren't getting it, this book could help you explain it better, or help them understand.

Great publication, easy to follow directions for tradiotonal and more modern projects.
I have not used this yet, but having looked through it has some projects I will definitely use in the future. The one especially helpful is the drop in seat for a dining chair, this uses foam which not many other upholstery books have. I know it is not the traditional way to upholster, but will be useful for my daughter as she has 3 young children, and needs seats which are easily cleaned and will have heavy use! Very clear pictures and diagrams and step by step instructions. I will use this publication more than another more traditional one I have. Some of the terminology is different as it is a US publication ( eg: slip seats instead of drop in seats) but so easy to follow.

Great book for those with some upholstery experience
Great photos, great step by step instructions and great introduction to tools but assumes throughout that reader is quick learner or has previous knowledge. A great book for my upholstery 'library'.
