A great read! Makes the science of brain health accessible and relatable to everyone. Recommend!
Kristen, the author, has written a highly readable book on the science of brain health. Normally, I wouldn't buy a book like this as these kinds of topics tend to be very dry and boring to me. But to my surprise, I devoured this book in one sitting! Kristen, who is a PH.D Neuroscientist, has written a highly engaging, readable and relatable book on brain health. She discusses the brain's major functions and then goes into detail on the various ways our environment, diet etc. can affect our brain's health. One of the main areas of the book is Kristen's work with the NFL. She and her colleagues worked with over 30 NFL players who had various types of brain trauma, to get their brain health to improve. I found it fascinating that using a combination of diet, supplements, exercise and working on cognition skills, these athletes were able to improve their brain health despite the trauma their brains had sustained from playing football. But more importantly, Kristen makes brain health and how to improve same, accessible to all of us. She personalizes this as well in her discussing her late father who had Parkinson's disease. A Marine Corps veteran, commercial pilot and firefighter, Kristen's dad was able to regain some modicum of his cognitive skills, despite the Parkinson's, due to some of the protocols Kristen describes in the book. This book is not theory. It has some but it is mostly practical in nature. Kristen tells you how 'you" can start today, to improve your own brain's health and as a by product, your own physical health as well.Kristen's style of writing is funny, personal, relatable, but with the gravitas of a real Neuroscientist. As I said, I read this book in one sitting and am personally putting into practice the recommendations Kristen makes so that I can improve my own brain health.Well worth reading and I highly recommend this book!Mike Howard - former Chief Security Officer - Microsoft and author of "The Art of Ronin Leadership."

One of the best books I've ever read for creating real change in my life
I didn't just read this book, I devoured it. Why? Because the author Kristen Willeumier has a talent for taking neuroscience off its lofty pedestal and making it relevant to everyday life. This book is packed with brainy insights but it doesn't make you feel like you're sitting in a lecture hall. Instead, it's like having a chat with a super smart friend who just happens to be an expert on the brain.I struggle to make changes in my life when I'm told, "do it because it's good for you." Awareness comes first but then I need to know why I need to make a change. I didn't even know that I was chronically dehydrated but then when she explained what that's actually doing to my brain, it was a game changer. I'd blamed normal aging for the fact that my eyes were always dry and burning. The minute I took her advice and started making sure I was properly hydrated, I no longer had dry eyes. I had pain in my right knee, probably from years of ballet. Her advice on taking Omega-3 supplements to reduce inflammation cleared that right up but it wasn't just any old Omega-3s, she was very specific about what kind of EFAs are the most important to reduce inflammation and boost brain function. Not only did the pain in my knee go away but my mood and focus improved as well. Her chapter on exercise and neurogenesis, the ability to grow new brain cells and improve learning and memory was fascinating and resulted in me adding even more aerobic exercise to my schedule.I loved this book and recommend it to brain enthusiasts and anyone looking to up their mental and physical game with simple, doable hacks. It's a game-changer.

Actionable items
Just finished reading it now. This book contains lists and instructions that I can mark and use after a quick read through the book. It's written by an expert who does this at the highest level. I hope it helps me.

Enhance your brain functioning at any age!
As a physiologist, I love this book. The author knows know her subject and she certainly knows how to get her concepts across to the general public. I have been sharing this book with my non-science oriented from, and they too are wowed by the content. You won't be disappointed. I invested in a paperback because there is so much to underline.

Outstanding book about how a damaged brain can be healed
I like to refer to the author, Kristen Willeumier, as Coach K. She was given that name by her NFL veteran clients. Coach K has written an outstanding book about how a healthy brain can be maintained and how a damaged brain can be healed. There probably has not been another group of athletes outside of boxers, that have had their brains smashed around a lot than professional football players. Just think about the defensive middle linemen in football, who are probably the strongest group of athletes on the planet, and they are incredibly fast. If you are a running back, receiver, or quarterback, they are coming for you at top speed hoping to create a nasty collision to hurt you. When Coach K worked at the Amen Clinics as the Director of Neuroimaging and Clinical Research, she led the efforts in utilizing imaging technologies to understand the neurobiological signatures underlying psychiatric disorders. Another big deal is that Coach K had great success in treating her ex-NFL clients which is extraordinary clinical work! She needs to be commended for her very important scientific-based treatments and doing it with great compassion. This book describes highlights the importance of good nutrition, vitamin supplements, adequate sleep, and proper exercise along with mind exercises including meditation. I highly recommend reading this book. It gives us great hope in the battles trying to find effective treatment for Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other serious neurological disorders.Dr. Zach - Neuroplastician
