The Burning World was originally released in 1989 and marks the first and last major label record for Michael Gira's Swans. The album was produced by Bill Laswell, a pairing that Gira claims was not a good fit and was forced upon him by the label. Despite Gira's own distaste for the record, its reputation has grown over the years and is now considered a fine effort from one of the most important and longest lasting New York post-punk groups. Long out of print on CD and fetching ridiculous sums on eBay, Water is proud to bring this title back into print and allow a new generation of Swans fans to hear it for the first time.

Awesome
Apparently amazon won’t let me leave positive feedback about amazon in general so my review is just the subject

Gira is a genius. This album is what you ...
Gira is a genius. This album is what you should expect from a genius. Quite different from other Swans material - it definitely points you in the direction of where he would go with Angels of Light.

Disappointing
Instrumentals were occasionally inventive, and there were some good lyrics, but overall doesn't have the intensity and feeling that I was hoping for. The lead singer doesn't sound like he's comfortable singing in this style yet and the songs suffer because of it.

Burning World

Why review Swans?
Your town is on fire, everybody is dead or run away, the world is coming to an end and you're stuck in a rubbish bin hoping for a quick death, this is THE sound track for it.Micheal gira's deadpan voice fits with anybodys end of the world scenario, his ex-missus on the other hand posesses a quality to her voice that makes me want to listen to her again and again. Not many people can make a Traffic song sound better than Traffic but it happens here.I'm not a person to write a review about Swans, because I like them too much, but this could be liked by anyone that's got a feel for tunes and nice harmonies with depressing words thrown in for good measure.

もっとも、Runtの紹介文によると“ The album was produced by Bill Laswell, a pairing that Gira claims was not a good fit and was forced upon him by the label”だそうで、Gira先生は本作の仕上がり・Laswell共に気に入っていなかったようなので、元々再発に関心は薄かったかも?
