Does this really have nylon gears?

The Whirley-Pop comes with the lid with nylon gears, but you can purchase a lid with metal gears. Ii did, after the original one wore out.

Do you have to use oil

Yes, oil is necessary to efficiently pop the corn without burning. Here's a trick I use: substitute half of the oil with regular or spreadable butter. You'll get the buttery flavor without the greasy, soggy mess (I SO hate that!)

Is it stainless steel or aluminum?

Aluminum with nylon gears. A stainless steel popper is available but it is more expensive.

Can this be used on an induction stove?

I don’t see why not. Might take a few batches to find the right temp. I’d start with medium low.
