Kestrel 5400 Heat Stress Tracker

Bought this off Amazon cause it had pretty good reviews and needed some for work. The product could not be updated. I bought another one and its on its way hopefully a better version

I guess I have to blame myself, but although I did a fair amount of research on this unit, including going to the manufacturers website, it will not work with Microsoft Windows without purchasing a separate USB Bluetooth dongle. OK, so I screwed up and didn't realize I would have to order the extra Bluetooth dongle. So, I go ahead and order the $30 Bluetooth dongle and then find out it still doesn't work the way I thought it would with Microsoft Windows. All the Bluetooth dongle gets you is the ability to download logs or update the firmware. There is apparently no way to simply monitor the data stream from the device from a computer. The only way you can remotely monitor the data stream is through a phone (or I assume a tablet). I bought this very high-end $600+ bundle to monitor conditions at my jobsites. I wanted to be able to monitor this through my computer, so this is a big let down. I haven't put this unit to much actual use yet, but so far the altitude fuction seems totally worthless. I do not foresee a big need for me to ever use the altitude function, but it logs the altitude along with the rest of the available data in the data stream downloadable logs. So, even though I entered the very accurate reference altitude for my position as well as the very accurate barometric pressure, the altitude readings are way off, which when viewed in the downloadable logs makes one think all the rest of the data may be suspect. I'll come back and update this review after a few weeks of actually daily use when we get to the masonry part of my project, where Michigan OSHA regulations require me to monitor the windspeeds all day, every day.

Pretty solid product. I purchased the Kestrel with the Link capability the only con I can find is the lack of output signal for remote viewing of conditions.

This item works great but should be weather proof
