This release is the first and only Complete Locatelli Edition ever! Locatelli composed in the tradition of the Italian Baroque, in the well-known forms of the concerto grosso, solo concerto, and trio sonata. Locatelli's style is inventive, flamboyant, and extremely virtuosic. His violin sonatas and concertos still present a daunting challenge to today's violinists. Russian violinist Igor Ruhadze was trained in his native Moscow as a virtuoso on the modern violin. However, Ruhadze's interest in early music took him into playing with such ensembles as Musica ad Rhenum, Jed Wentz, and others. Ruhadze's solid technique enables him to tackle the difficulties of Locatelli's music with ease, charm, and brilliance on this recording. The featured ensemble, Violini Capricciosi play on original instruments and follow historically informed performance practice.

Brilliant Complete Locatelli EditionAny and all of my previous recorded experience with the composer Pietro Locatelli has been by way of just a fraction, a portion of this total oeuvre provided to us as a purchase opportunity from Brilliant Classics, has been by way of a thirty year old Vox CD recording of his twelve Opus 1 Concerti Grossi on just two compact discs. That set appeared to be very heavily, even seemingly disproportionately scored for the cello, in a lop-sided fashion in the ripieno scoring, in order to compensate for the larger number of violins in the concertino portion. That set did not please, and since I acquired those Op. 1 pieces, I have seldom played these two compact discs, again until now, in order to make a more intelligent comparison between it and this newly acquired set. With this set, I am more than inspired to reacquaint myself with Locatelliās accomplishment in the violin virtuoso genre, I am favorably impressed. That aforementioned effort is not only duplicated here, together with Locatelliās complete works, but the Opus 1 recordings included in this twenty one compact disc box far exceeds my personal experience with my previously owned recordings in terms not only of audio quality, but with the sound. The cello pleases in this set. It is a delight to the ears to listen. The twenty one compact discs included in this box are a collection of previously released and subdivided material from four previously released four and five compact disc and .mp3 sets on Brilliant Classics. Included herein are the complete Trio Sonatas, the complete Violin Concerti, the complete Concerti Grossi, and a slight duplication of the Trio Sonatas, Op. 5, arranged for Flute, played by Brilliant Classicsā seemingly go to in house, flute virtuoso, Jed Wentz, who does a very commendable job, as does Mr. Ruhadje. Collectively, all of the enclosed works here was originally released and published in Amsterdam, coincidentally just like Antonio Vivaldiās own works Opus numbered 1 through 12 were, this Locatelli collection published in series as Opus Nos. 1 through 8. The recordings in this set are not recorded in Opus Number order, but are grouped by genre. There are other additional compositions which would have actually been Locatelliās published Opus 9, but they were irretrievably lost, and sadly for us, it was never preserved as a published copy-lost forever.ALL OF THE SETS BELOW ARE INCLUDED HERE:http://www.amazon.com/Locatelli-Edition-Volume-Trio-Sonatas/dp/B0085U0H00/ref=pd_sim_15_5?ie=UTF8&dpID=6165OO%2BrcZL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=04YM5E6ZCXK91Z2D78HQhttp://www.amazon.com/Locatelli-Edition-Volume-Violin-Sonatas/dp/B009F2CW96/ref=pd_bxgy_15_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=026QP3V6GC63M2ZT5B7Hhttp://www.amazon.com/LArte-Del-Violino-Complete-Concertos/dp/B00EZCVE7C/ref=pd_bxgy_15_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=1RH8SXEG57GNK3ZS8P01http://www.amazon.com/Locatelli-Concerti-Grossi-Box-Set/dp/B0157ELHR8/ref=pd_sim_15_7?ie=UTF8&dpID=51gTUicX5JL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=146RFNCNT6H01HYDJRPDhttp://www.amazon.com/Locatelli-Flute-Sonatas-Complete-Pietro/dp/B000A0HFX0/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1458925917&sr=1-1&keywords=locatelli+wentzMake absolutely no mistake about it. Pietro Locatelli was born at the tail end of that miraculous generation of composers which included Bach, Handel, Telemann, Vivaldi, Rameau, Corelli his teacher, among so many others, but like his contemporary Giuseppi Tartini, Pietro Locatelliās instrument of choice was the violin, upon which he was a virtuoso, who composed so much out of his own violin repertoire which he jealously guarded, and which only he himself could physically play. Few ensembles in the ensuing generations since he lived have even tried to play, until now in this set. You cannot, nor will not be able to buy another duplicate set of this very finely played late Baroque violin material, some seventy total works in all. Locatelli was not nearly as prolific a composer as Vivaldi with all of his rediscovered hoard, he far exceeded his teacher, Archangelo Corelli with his output, doubling it. The set discussed here is fairly evenly divided among each of the previously aforementioned genres, from this particular composer. And especially at this particular price, if you love Baroque music, especially good, technically skilled violin playing, you cannot go wrong here, and priced at about forty dollars shipped, this box would only enhance, ennoble, and beautify that part of your recorded music collection, filed in your Baroque section. My two previous Locatelli recordings:Locatelli: Concerti Grossi, Op. 1, Nos. 1- 6Locatelli: Concerti Grossi Op.1 Nos. 7-12These are listed with links in comment #1.

Never having counted this Master among the giants of baroque ...
Never having counted this Master among the giants of baroque, this extraordinary compilation hasenlightened both my knowledge and awareness as to the role Locatelli played in the culmination of the Italian baroque.Anyone with the slightest interest in this period and lets not forget that he was a direct contemporary of Bach, Handel and Scarlatti, should not hesitate to consider investing in this box of gems.GRB

Excellent!
Excellent performances of wonderful compositions by a Baroque master heretofore unknown to me. Made the mistake of starting to acquire Locatelli's works separately -- a costly error. This wonderful "complete" set is the way to travel.

Great bargain for baroque lovers
What a great bargain. Locatelli will please all baroque lovers. The sonatas alone are worth the price. The performance and recordings are great too.
