Photos in Cookbook Aren't Actual Recipe Listed.
I liked the way the book is bound as it makes it very cook friendly and the descriptions of Amish and Mennonite life were very interesting. But the main reason I bought this book was for the photos of the foods. However, the photos are NOT of the dishes pictured but only similar dishes. I discovered this when the first recipe I reviewed and made, the speedy brownies looked NOTHING like the photo. So I reviewed more. There is a chicken casserole that clearly shows noodles when the recipe has none. There's a chicken and rice casserole that shows red peppers and other chunky ingredients and no sauce when the recipe has no veggies and a cream sauce. A hot potato salad which is made of a clear vinegar base has a picture of a mayo-laden salad. The chicken salad pictured contains no fruit like the recipe itself. There's a recipe for a candy mixture containing cereal and coconut that has a picture of simple spiced nuts. The “recipe” pictures are simply random photos from a blog and are NOT the actual final product. The seven layer casserole dinner doesn't even remotely look like the recipe described. There are also some errors in the recipes. The cinnamon bread, for example, calls for using 3/4 of the cinnamon mixture on each of the two loaves. Do the math. The corn casserole has you putting the corn kernels through a blender with a liquid. Amish corn casserole only beats the eggs into the liquid not the corn itself. There's a recipe that calls for a box of corn muffin mix but does not state what size box (they can vary from Jiffy size to full size). The whole wheat pancakes use a full cup of brown sugar to just two cups of flour (typical w.w. pancakes use 2-3 Tablepoons of sugar for that amount of flour). Honestly I'm hesitant to actually make any of these recipes as they do not appear to be kitchen-tested by the author.

Measures ingredients in "boxes" and "packages"
Many of the recipes look... well, not interesting, but simple and plain and ok. My biggest complaint is that ingredients are measured using indeterminate amounts. What is "1 small box puffed rice" (cracker jacks, p. 143)? How about "2 packages Red Hot cinnamon candies" (red cinnamon pickles, p. 121)? How about "3 packages Tang" (friendship tea, p. 12)? And so on and so on. What good is a book of recipes if I can't determine the amount of ingredients used?

should be called "shortcut cooking", not from scratch recipes as expected
I bought an Amish cookbook because I love the from-scratch cooking that Amish people do. this book was the polar opposite- shortcut cooking, using cans of soups and such in many of the recipes. if you like that sort of thing, maybe it's good. but seems contradictory to the concept of Amish cooking to me. I returned it

Delicious food from Plain folks
I just came back from Amish country in Shipshewana, Indiana and was enthralled with good, farm down-home country cooking. Chicken with noodles, noodles plain, roast beef, strawberry pies....I needed a cookbook that would help me mimic these tastes and this is the one I picked. It has a lot of good, plain Amish cooking. The format is very readable and nicely laid out on the page making it a pleasure to browse through and get inspiration from. Even my roommate was inspired and thought there are many, many recipes in this book which she would like to make. I heartily agree. Pick up a copy, it is very affordable and a good addition for the home cook who wants good, plain country cooking. Now to go off and make some chicken....

Fun Cookbook
My husband is regularly served healthy food by his house slave (JUST KIDDING) and I'm typically a low carb eater, but balance in life is a good thing. This book is plain fun. (pun intended) There are great recipes for taking to potlucks or reunions that are hearty and filling. One of my favorite things though is the crazy simple ice water pie pastry that turns out thin and perfect EVERY TIME. I enjoy cooking and sharing it with my neighbors, mail carrier, garbage men, etc. and this book has plenty of great recipes to make and share.

Fabulous book
Beautiful book with fun recipes. I enjoyed the pictures and side notes throughout the book. Well written with quality recipes. If you can only purchase one Amish cookbook it definitely should be this one.

Good Authentic Amish Recipes
My wife loves preparing the Amish dishes I loved growing up in Central Pennslyvania. The recipes are authentic and what my family with Pa. Dutch roots prepared.
