Gene the Dean Does the Devil Proud
The newest Epic Collection to feature the scarlet swashbuckler is Volume 3, taking us from 1968 straight through into 1970. It's a period that introduces a couple of new villains, but more importantly really hammers home how much of the character hinges upon the tortuous soul-searching of Matt Murdock (albeit in a much more light-hearted manner than would later develop, this being the sixties an' all). These stories also see Stan the Man hand over to Roy the Boy in terms of writing duties; there's actually not that big a gear change in terms of writing style, as Thomas was consciously aping Lee's inimitable house style at this point, only with a few extra literary references. The art is a major draw of this volume, though; with the exception of a few issues drawn by a young Barry Windsor Smith, Marvel legend Gene Colan does fabulous work throughout - Hornhead's adventures have rarely looked better. The battle scenes are gorgeous ballets of aerodynamic violence, and Gene knows exactly when to drop in a wonderful splash page to best dramatic effect. Outside the superheroics, his faces are second to none - whether it be the pained, handsome visage of Matt Murdock, the frantic beauty of Karen Page or the lugubrious expressions of Foggy Nelson, every one of Colan's cast drips with character. The stories see the introduction of the Jester and Starr Saxon, both villains that cause the Man Without Fear some definite identity issues. Without spoiling too much, this book sees a false murder charge, a faked death, blackmail and a confession to one of the longtime supporting cast. As well as the new faces, old foes such as Stiltman, the Gladiator, Mr Hyde and the Cobra also make appearances. Daredevil is still feeling the lack of an archnemesis at this point, but Kingpin is not too far off...A large amount of pagespace is given over to Matt's relationship with Karen; in typical Lee/Thomas fashion, the road to romance for a Marvel superhero does not run smooth, with both Murdock's disability and his double vigilante life coming between the two lovers. Matt spends a lot of time deciding which identity is the one he can least live without, which makes for some entertaining angst. An extremely solid early run of stories, then, with a typically polished Epic presentation that includes a few bonus pages of original Colan art (including an unused cover design). Recommended as not the best Silver Age Marvel had to offer, but extremely worthwhile all the same.
