On phone volume control only for ios at least. You can also map the buttons on the buds to control volume on the app

would these be fine for working out at the gym?

I regularly mow the yard in them. Head shake test says as long as you have the right size tips they should be fine. Maybe invest in a foam set of tips if you want an even more secure fit.
