One Mississippi
In this film Sandra Bullock plays Leigh Anne Tuohy a well to do interior designer married to Sean Tuohy (Country music star Tim Mcgraw) with two kids and a big house life for them is near to perfect. For Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) things are the opposite, no home, sleeping on floors and couches, taken away from his mother when he was young things have not been easy for his short life so far.A chance encounter on a cold rainy night in Memphis starts an incredible journey that will change Michael's life forever. There is a reason why Sandra Bullock won a Golden Globe and an Oscar in 2009 for Best Actress. She is outstanding as the head strong southern belle who knows her mind and isn't afraid to use it. In one scene Michael says something to her (don't want to spoil anything) she just says one line walks into another room and sits down, in that one moment without another word she portrays so much anguish that I teared up and my mum was in tears.Supported by a very strong supporting cast this film is one that will have you in tears and laughing out loud. Quinton Arron gives an outstanding performance as the gentle giant and holds his own alongside someone of Sandra Bullocks presence, in addition Jae Head who plays the Touhy's youngest son is a little gem to watch, for someone so young he adds another dimension to every scene he appears in and is just plain fun to watch.Don't be put off by the fact that this is based on the real life of an American Football star, knowledge of the game is not really needed or required.

The making of a football star
For me, this is family at its best: a loving mum, dad, daughter and son. Then, introduce a big older boy with many needs. We come to see how embracing Big Mike [Michael] into the family, expands the family's love, and expands Michael, too, in every area.He began as a victim of circumstances, with little hope. The foresight and righteous pleading of Coach Cotton, and Leigh Anne's love, enabled him to grow and become the great success he is.It is so touching the way Leigh Anne rescues Big Mike from wandering homeless on a "freezing" night, and makes a bed for him on the downstairs couch, then includes him in their family Thanksgiving "banquet" the next day. But right from the start, Michael shows his protective instinct and his love for Leigh Anne, and then for Sean Junior [SJ]. Leigh Anne gave Michael his first bed: a precious moment. There are many more precious moments: Michael pushing 2 little girls on swings, to their great delight; Collins leaving her friends to sit with Michael to do "homework" at school; little SJ "coaching" and "training" Michael; the family welcoming him into their midst; family sitting together as Leigh Anne reads children's stories to them; and Michael's touching farewell hug with his Mama, as he was leaving for University.I do love his little brother SJ, who, far from being intimidated by his size, responds to Michael almost as an equal, but clearly loves him dearly. Later on, his negotiating along with Michael for the best deal from the Universities eager to recruit Michael, is sweet.I love this film. I have just a few "special favourite dvd's": this is one of them.

Who would have thought we'd have a black son before we had a democrat?
The Blind Side is written and directed by John Lee Hancock. It stars Sandra Bullock, Quinton Aaron, Tim McGraw, Jae Head, Lily Collins and Kathy Bates. Music is scored by Carter Burwell and cinematography by Alar Kivilo.17 year old Michael Oher (Aaron) has been denied a stable upbringing in a loving family, wandering the streets devoid of an education of note and perhaps one step away from falling in with the wrong crowd? Big Mike is taken in by Leigh Anne Tuohy (Bullock) and her family. Motives and means will be questioned elsewhere, but Leigh Anne taps into Big Mike's psyche and unearths a potential football star, but he, and the Tuhoy family, must overcome obstacles first.A big hit at the box office whilst garnering Bullock the Academy award for Best Actress, The Blind Side is proof positive that in a world that is often crappy, a simple button pushing movie can soar high and provide airy relief. Based on a true story, the film never lacks for emotional thrust, it is undeniably a sweet, and at times, uplifting picture, yet it lacks a dramatic edge, a boldness to really make the story grab you around the throat, forcing us to gasp for the emotional air floating up there in the sky. There's a tangible feeling of manipulation, a good ole whitey saves the down on his luck black fella narrative, where regardless of truth, it's a bit annoying to see Michael Oher (you know, the guy who the story is about) playing second fiddle throughout. With scenes involving Oher's mother (Adriane Lenox) lacking any emotional gravitas and the trips to the Ghetto devoid of genuine grit, Hancock is fortunate that the audience reaching out for some uplift was prepared to forgive these errors. That he had Bullock on top form also helps considerably. He should be commended for getting a performance of such unswerving charisma from her, even if it relegates everyone else around her to the sidelines. It was a role Bullock kept turning down (it had been offered to Julia Roberts first), she wasn't sure she could portray well enough such as strong religious lady as Leigh Anne Tuhoy, but eventually she signed on and etched her name into the annals of Academy Award winners. If it's the best actress performance of 2009 is up for much debate, as is if it is even Bullock's best career performance in fact? But undeniably it's a star turn that manages to hide the failings lurking under the sweetly stitched quilt pieced together by Hancock. In Bullock's hands the Tuhoy character holds our attention throughout with a mixture of strength, spunk and unflinching beliefs. If she's shouting down a redneck idiot, correcting a football coach or fronting up to a big mouth Ghetto leader, she has us firmly on side and eating out of her hands. She's the main draw card here, which is both a blessing and a hindrance. Best to roll up for this one expecting to be moved and cheered, but be prepared for a lack of complexity and guts. 7/10
