Works great, pretty quick, but will likely need a heat sink
I put one of these in an embedded application, and what can I say - it works great. It does however almost certainly need a heat sink... even just connecting it and using it on a desk to set it up it would random shut off or lock up. With a heat sink, no problem. There are multiple chips that get hot, so I used a passive that covers the entire board, but it's quite likely that just small stick-ons might be fine. Mine's emulation a pdp-10 (PiDP-10 kit) so is running continuously at about 160% CPU (load avg 1.6). The heat sink wasn't even a perfect fit, and won't cleanly contact all packages, but is still sufficient. It's been running continuously for about 5 days now. Pretty neat. The 8GB RAM lets Linux keep much of the storage (the parts actually used) resident, opportunistically cached even when not in active use (or open).Plan for a heat sink, or two small sticky ones, and a 5V 5A USB-C supply. The HDMI is micro-HDMI, so if you plan to use a display make sure to get a cable for that as well (micro-HDMI to regular HDMI if that's what your display input is).

Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB
Been using Raspberry Pis for several years to run various IoT things throughout my house. Purchased the RPI5 with 8GB to run Batocera. Works great to run old school games that I haven't played in many many years. Runs extremely fast and allows for NVMe storage! A little pricey but so far its working great

Good price.
It's a Raspberry Pi - what more can you say? Much quicker than the Pi 4 and I like that there are connections for a fan.

New gpio chip set is great
Was irritated at first with the new gpio chip sets but the Python code and gpio zero result in much cleaner code.Fortunately I didn’t have tons of code in RPi

Highly recommend!
The Raspberry Pi 5 board feels solid and well-built, with no flimsy components. Everything on the board appears to be of high quality. If you're looking for a reliable Pi 5 board, I highly recommend this one!

Abundant software almost compensates for awkward harware.
The Raspberry Pi OS (Debian with builtin drivers) is a rugged software framework that allows good performance if you're careful with the fragile micro-HDMI and ribbon connectors. The lack of an Audio jack was also a disappointment for me. Adding the M.2 NVME interface improves the performance (almost 5X over SD card). However, running Raspbian on the rk3588s or S905 systems is the same or better with far more resilient hardware.
