Decent pump for automotive AC
Replace the fuel seals on my AC system on my vehicle. I ended up losing all the freon due to these leaks. So instead of taking it somewhere I have a set of gauges but I needed a vacuum pump to pull vacuum on the system and make sure it has no more leaks and to dry it out. I settled on this pump I know it's only a quarter horsepower but it does the job. It pumped down the system fairly quickly in about 15 minutes but I let it run for over an hour to ensure it pulled a heavy vacuum to help dry out the system. I let the system sit for about 5 hours make sure I had no leaks. I fill the system with freon and it works great. The nice thing about this pump is it comes with the oil, and there are two type of fittings on the pump one for r22 and one for r143a. The pump construction seems pretty durable although I wouldn't drop it it will probably snap something. The oil is easy to drain and the side Glass is nice so you can see any contamination in the oil. Just make sure when you replace the oil you you vacuum pump oil of a good quality. I imagine after a few uses the oil will become contaminated with moisture. Otherwise this pump work fantastic for my intermittent use for the home mechanic

Fantastic vacuum pump for the DIYer, or low volume solo pro.
WHile my career shifted decades ago, I still have the knownedge and skills to DIY my own repairs when my AC dies on my car. First things first, this is NOT a recovery machine, nor is it intended to be. If you are DIYing your own AC repair, take the unit in to have it recovered by a local shop or shade tree with a recovery machine. They might actually pay YOU for the refrigerant recovered.... Break in procedure is in the user guide, such as it is. The oil included is of course vital. Hook it up properly to an empty system that needs to be vacuumed, open your low side guage and turn this thing on, watch it slam the needle over and you are pulling plenty of vacuum with no funny noises. Build quality seems decent enough for the cost. To be blunt it just does what I need it to do, and really have no reason to suspect it of not being able to hold up to light to medium use. I wouldn't want it to be my only vacuum pump in a busy shop where i Need to move several cars a day to make my living, but for DIYer or a mechanic that might do a job once a month involving vacuuming down an auto AC system this would really fill the bill...

Well worth the money.
This thing is great. I just installed two new mini split heat pumps and ordered this to pull the vacuum before releasing the refrigerant. It took 18 minutes to get into microns. About an hour to get to 500 microns. Coming from a former professional hvac technician, this little quarter horsepower vacuum pump is well worth the money.

handle is handy :-) no easy way to drain oil, muffler blew itself to bits
to drain the oil you remove the sump plug, but no oil comes out. This is not a great surprise. At this stage you usually rotate the motor by hand pumping out the oil. However there is no easy way to rotate the motor; the fan is covered, and the end of the motor shaft has a flat blade slot. You would need the patience of a saint to get the oil out cranking a flat blade screw driver. The end of the motor shaft should have a big hex key fitting, say 10mm, so you can put the pump on the edge of a table and crank with the long end of a 10mm hex key. Without being able to hand crank the motor, you have to fire it up electrically, when the oil comes out in a strong jet. You have to have the oil pump facing into a used oil tank before turning on the electricity or it will splatter everywhere (as I found out). Update: The exhaust from the pump is noisy and spits oil(as expected), so the exhaust has a plastice muffler. The muffler faces up and has a cap to stop anything falling into the pump/muffler (reasonable). However the cap doesn't let air out. Thus when you turn the pump on, the cap pops off about 1m into the air and you have to find where it went. It's easy to make a cap that lets air in and out - the roofs of houses have ventillation pipes from bathrooms and stoves that do exactly that. update 2 months later. Usually when I startup the muffler cap pops off and is easiely retreivable on the floor next to pump. Today the muffler and cap blew itself apart on startup, spreading the insides all around my hobby room. The body of the muffer is still attached to the pump, but I can't find any of the bits that were inside, including the cap, and the pump now sounds like a car without a muffler.

I use this to create a vacuum to transfer and filter wine for bottling. It worked extremely well. I use typical hoses you get from the wine supply stores with no issues.
