Live 8 [DVD] [2005]

How do you follow Live Aid? With this…
Live Aid was the concert that had both music fans and ordinary, but concern people glued to their televisions in aid of famine relief. Could it be repeated, to carry on raising money.Yes, and here is the proof, Live 8. A gathering of both young and mature artists. Both The Who and Pink Floyd appeared. For the Floyd this was their last live appearance with the original lineup that brought us Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall. On the night they were late as the concert overran, but that performance is worth the price of this DVD alone. We see a band that had reached the pinnacle of success, then crumble under personal tensions, brought back together for a long awaited performance. We hope that this was a rebirth, a mending of the ways, but it was not to be. The concert continued the famine relief work by raising money to help those in need. Another slice of musical history complete with a pink cherry on top. Recommended.

Some great performances, some not so great....
I must confess I wasn't going to apply for tickets for Live 8 until I heard that Pink Floyd were re-forming for it!! For me this fact alone would have been reason enough to attend, though I know that is missing the point of the concert somewhat. It was a great feeling being part of something so big and indeed there was an element of excitement even in travelling to the venue, however I felt that once there the even lost it's atmosphere somewhat. I attend the V Festival every year and everyone there is an avid music lover, the atmosphere is amazing, I felt that perhaps due to the lottery style ticket system at Live 8 this was missing. We were quite lucky in that we were fairly well forward, though due to the 'Golden Circle' this was still a fair way from the stage. Despite our relative proximity to the stage the sound was very poor, basslines seeming to overpower the vocals which for some artists must have been a real benefit!I went with an open mind in terms of all performers, and in the whole was pleased. However some of the choices seemed less than obvious. For me the highlites were, Coldplay featuring Richard Ashcroft, The Killers, Keane, Dido & Youssou N'Dour, Snow Patrol, Travis, Razorlight, REM, Robbie Williams (didn't think I would be saying that!),The Who and Pink Floyd. The dissapointments were Mariah Carey (was dreading her before I went, predicted she would think that everyone was there to see her! She then makes a fuss about having a bottle of water brought to stage before she could perform, then that one was too warm - bring your own bottle love, everyone else is getting on with it to promote a higher cause!) Madonna (Insisted on playing a extended version of 'Music' which we all know by now, it looped forever at the end while she tried to get everybody to clap, meanwhile artists like the Killers have to cut their sets short. Peter Kay - predictably sang 'Show me the way....' and totally failed to be funny, to be fair I think they put him on to fill a gap for equipment to be moved in a desperate attempt to keep the crowd, which was a shame as I had always been a fan of his. I truly felt that by early evening the event had lost the audience, with Mariah Carey being the final straw (as Snow Patrol would put it). Then something amazing happened - Robbie Williams came on!!! Now I am definitely not his biggest fan, though he doesn't offend me at all, but what a show man. He had the crowd's attention immediately, with everyone singing along to 'Angels' it was brilliant! For me the biggest highlites were still to come (having seen a lot of the newer artists over the past few years) the novelties were The Who and Pink Floyd, both were absolutely brilliant!!All in all, for it's highs and lows, this is a piece of history. A massive undertaking at very short notice and under those circumstances an amazing achievement. It also shows the power of music to bring so many people together. The line-up was massive, and to be fair probably designed to cater for a wide audience, as an attendee of the concert the DVD is a must, and if you weren't one of the lucky 100,000 to get tickets then get the DVD to see what you missed.

Enjoyed Very Much
This is a first class record of the Live 8 Concert and a most enjoyable experience watching all four discs about 10 hours worth.

In reply to 'A missed opportunity'!
I was actualy there on the day, and i must say although it was a bit of a squeeze it was one of the best days i can remeber! You seem to be overlooking a small fact, Pink Floyd playing on stage for the first time since 94, and with roger waters there with them, i promise that i'll remember till my dyinig day! I cant see how you can use the fact that no mics cut out as a negative, as a sound engineer myself i promise you thats not the aim. As for Freddie Mercury, i would have loved to see him there and i'm sure he would have put on an amazing show, if he was still alive =)I do agree with you about the gold circle at the front though, how much room did they have! (again full marks to floyd for refusing to go in the and walking around the 'real' crowd)I cant coment on the DVD because i havn't seen it yet, but the day it self was amazing and unforgetable! I know i'll be buying the DVD! =)

Coolest rock concert ever
Ever wanted a live album with all your favourite acts? Well, here it is, Live 8. It has everything. Rock, pop, hip hop, R&B, it's all there. Some of the classic acts include U2, Coldplay, Snow Patrol, Madonna, Green Day, to name a few.Highlights of the concert are Pink Floyd, together again after 20 years of acrimony. Possibly the best performance out of the whole concert. Madonna's performance blows you away, she steals the show big-time. Another act who practically steals the show is Robbie Williams, he's a born performer & loves every minute of it.In between acts you have Brad Pitt, George Clooney & Will Smith making an appearance, which is very entertaining. There are some really great extras on the dvds too. For the price, this is a seriously good buy.Only thing missing is Queen.....Freddy Mercury's Live Aid '85 is still undoubtedly one of the best rock performances ever.....but don't let that spoil things!

Collectors item
Worth buying just for Pink Floyd's performance. Plenty of great music on 4 DVDs from the UK and EU performances but those from the US stage are a bit underwhelming.
