What do you do with the pellets when they're spent?

The pellets are supposed be reused for up to 70 loads, so you'll need something to hold the pellets, so I suppose you could use something else other than the egg.

I would NOT do this. The pellets do no dissolve or do so very slowly. The pellets could become wedged and cause damage to the inner workings of a toilet. Buy something specifically made for this purpose.
