It's great
The Saxon Math 2 homeschool kit comes with a spiral-bound lesson book (132 lessons), two books of worksheets (roughly two per lesson), written assessments, oral assessments, timed math-fact drill papers, cardboard flashcards and paper-cut-out manipulatives, a daily "meeting book" (for exploring date/weather concepts, charting and graphing, number lines and skip counting tables), and grading sheets.Along with this, we have the Saxon Math manipulatives (good for kindergarten through third graders, and up -- even older kids like to play with the "math toys". Manipulative Kit for Saxon Math K-3 We bought this to challenge a younger child who was ready for more math than school could (was willing to) provide. So one of the things I noticed first was that the daily lessons were geared for an August-June school year, rather than just having blank calendar pages the child could fill in. Starting off-cycle means many of the lesson plans have to be adjusted... we just do this on the fly, but I wanted to mention it.The grading sheets have also been a trick to figure out -- the set includes grading sheets for an entire class of children, rather than just the one (or two) children most homeschool families might be instructing. So you use one measly line of the grading sheet for your child. Again, this is not a deal-breaker, but seems like a lazy adaptation of these materials for homeschoolers. The assessments (oral and written), timed drills, and daily practice worksheets have been great. The lessons are clear and easy to do. And sometimes fun! We like using the manipulatives. This was a good purchase.Everything comes three-hole punched, so we keep it in a three-ring binder. Fairly cheap and easy to use. Good results.

Awesome!
I wish I had this math curriculum as a kid! I worried about teaching my daughter math but this makes it easy! She went to a charter school for kindergarten who used the saxon first grade level and she excelled in math. Now that we are homeschooling we are using Saxon and she is still excelling and we are loving the lessons. The concepts are gently introduced among lots of review in a spiral method. Various teaching methods are used to convey the concepts over several lessons so that they get it. And when they understand a concept-they won't forget it! They use the concept learned and develope it further. Perfect! The math manipulatives kit is highly recommended. It's part of the lessons. Without it you would have to improvise a lot.It also has scripted lessons that you can follow word for word....after several lessons you'll have your own words and know what to say and when to read.

which can lead people to believe it's not great. I think people have to keep in mind ...
About 1/3 of this book is review or a repeat of the Math 1 book, which can lead people to believe it's not great. I think people have to keep in mind that with traditional school years, kids forget a lot during the summer and then are reviewing a lot of Math concepts they already learned previously the first part of a new school year. It also follows the American style of teaching Math which is a spiral, hitting similar concepts several times a year and many years in a row. I saw that frustrating phenomena when I was teaching 7th and 8th grade Math. There was almost no difference in what the two different grades were learning. If you push those things aside, I gave this a 4 star rating because I really like the way Saxon Math introduces concepts with objects familiar to children (i.e. stuffed animals, crayons, food). It takes something familiar and transitions to number sentences and Math concepts shown with just numbers so that it's an easy transition and the child can easily make the connection. I also like that it goes slowly through concepts. Now I'm homeschooling ( I have three children, the oldest is a 1st grader in 2nd grade math) and one of my children is very good at Math. I skip lessons and worksheets that are redundant when he knows a concept really well already. I have another child that I suspect will need the slower approach to math so I'm glad I have this and can do it both ways according to my childrens' needs. SKIP what you need to and use what is needed. That might make you feel like you're spending a lot of money for something that you're not going to use completely, but I still think it's a great resource to teaching Math. It gives you structure to follow if you need that as a homeschooler / teacher. I think if you are a homeschooler, realize you can be flexible with how slow or quickly your child needs to go through Math concepts. I also will stop on lessons and math problems that need to be learned really solid. If my son is having trouble remember answers to memorized math problems (after proving why the answer is true) I stop and review for a few days until it's solid. I think the reason some people think they are terrible at math simply weren't given enough time for their mind to put the pieces together and master a certain concept. While the class moved on, they got a little stuck on a concept. If a child is having trouble with math, slow it down and try to use a different modality to teach (i.e. movement, holding objects/tactile, etc.). Saxon does a good job including things to touch during lessons, which is also good. Just my two cents and observations as a public school math teacher and now as a homeschool teacher. I hope this helps.

Enjoyable and easy to use
This is our first time using Saxon. I like that it is repetitive, that’s the best way to learn with kids. The only I didn’t like was that I needed some extra items to go with the curriculum. At the price of it I’d figure the extras could have come. But I was able to find what I needed (shapes) at Mastermind Toys and it worked out o.k. My other kids enjoy using them too.Looking forward to Saxon 3 for next year. It really is an outstanding curriculum.
