Microsoft Sidewinder Mouse

Ordered this mouse couple days ago, snagged the last one (20/4/10 - sorry guys :-P), I thought it was the Sidewinder x8, in looks it is identical, and the only discernible difference is the fact that the mouse wheel doesn't do the whole left/right tilt thing. as far as I'm concerned this is the x8 - just massively reduced in price - oh and it wired (if the x8 doesn't come in a wired version)Packaging:-The packaging was nice, well presented and even better - it was held together with nothing more than friction, will a little persuasion this thing comes out of the box nicely - no bits go flying through excessive force and you don't run the risk of cutting cables to get through the plastic - great stuffManuals and install process:-All the manuals explain everything fully, nice pictures and no use of jargon (save for "dpi" but there's really no other way of putting it)The install was quick and painless, 2minutes and I was fiddling away with it.Build quality:-Precision engineered, all the parts fit together immaculately, there is no squaking plastic if pressure is applied (like when you hold the phone to your ear a bit tightly with your shoulder - might just be my phone though...) the quality is what you should expect when paying around £30 for a mouse, no loose buttons just quality parts, the laser housing, scroll wheel and the thumb buttons on the side are made from a polished metal, a nice touch I feel, and the wheel spins freely with little effort - its also grooved for grip - so even if your hands are a little sweaty from that all nighter, your still gonna be scrolling with style.Features:-The Macro record button is a pretty cool feature, saves you digging around for that program you left on your desktop somewhere to find that macro-editing program that you vaguely know how to use, also the little display that exhibits various icons is helpful, detailing what dpi your mouse is set at (sensitivity for those of you who didn't know, 2000 dpi - cursor flies pretty quick/400 dpi is the opposite) there are three buttons that you can set a dpi level for, to start with they are 400, 800 and 2000, but you can change them at will, as the display is hidden whilst the mouse is in use by your thumb, the dpi switching buttons (under the scroll wheel) illuminate to show which setting is in use, handy for switching between that steady "sniping" accuracy, or that quick shifting movements with nary a flick of the index finger.the steel thumb buttons are customisable macro keys, useful for things such as crouching or throwing frags (Call of Duty), but also useful for surfing the web, things like "back" or "home" can be bound to them, making using the internet just that little more lazy :-)Weights and feet:-The weight of the mouse is adjustable from the stock weight of the mouse, to that plus 35grams, so this mouse is truly customisable, and for sliding across your chosen surface, there are 3 types of feet supplied, one of the sets is coated with the non-stick chemical "Teflon" to make you really fly! all adjustable with no tools and very little know how! even my grandmother could do it :-)Summary:-This is a great mouse to have, if your new to computing or if your a real pro, its got anything you could possibly need in a mouse, plus that little bit of "pizz-azz" to really set the envy of your mates at your next LAN party, or even just something cool and comfortable to click around the internet with.I would recommend this product to a friend, and it was everything I expected it to be in a cool looking bundle, now if you'll excuse me, I have to go brag about this mouse to someone else ^_^

This could be a good gamers mouse if they would only sort out a couple of issues.The side buttons are not in the best position to be reached naturally when holding the mouse. You have to stretch to use them.My other issue is that the middle wheel is made of cheap metal. Anyone who has an alergy to metal (10% of people) will get a nasty rash from this mouse.Apart from this it's very easy to set up and use and would have got 5 stars.

Broke down just after a years use, Microsoft replaced with sidewinder x8 no quibbles. During it operation it was quite accurate

The sidewinder mouse is a bizarre looking mouse - it's one of those designs that you either love or hate. Regardless of whether you like the look or not, you will need large hands in order for this mouse to feel comfortable in use.Setting up the mouse is relatively quick and painless, with as much time dedicated to getting the additional weights and mouse feet configured just right as to downloading and installing the Intellimouse software from the Microsoft Web Site.Once installed, the software is easy to use, with the variable DPI settings and button assignments quick and straightforward to alter.Whilst I play games frequently, my reasons for purchasing this mouse were not gaming related - I do a lot of photo editing & wanted something that could be very sensitive when required and yet also allow for detailed work with a fine degree of control. In this regard the mouse is truly excellent (It's also pretty good for gaming too).With the addition of the supplied weights, the mouse feels solid and very nicely weighted and is a joy to use (I liked it so much that I bought myself another one to use on my PC at work...). It's a well put together piece of kit that doesn't feel as though it's going to fall apart any time soon. This is particularly true of the side mounted buttons and the heavy scroll wheel - all of which have a satisfying action.All in all, a great mouse that I would thoroughly recommend...

I traded up to this mouse from a Logitec gaming mouse. My first feelings where that the mouse "felt" a lot bigger. After an hour of use however, it normal and a lot more comfy for use. The metal buttons (3 in total) feel a lot more heavy duty than anything I've used before and there is something satisfy with feeling a metal scroll wheel rather than rubber / plastic one. The weight of the mouse can be adjusted to your own tastes and the "on the fly" DPI adjustment works fantasticly in FPS games.The only thing I would warn people about is the default set up of buttons. Whilst completely re-mapable, one of the side buttons is defaulted to a macro record/playback config. It's a bit worrying the first time you see all your key presses, keyboard typing and mouse movement actions replaying without acctually realising whats going on. Not a problem if you read the manual you'd think but since microsoft make no mention of it, it took a google search to find out why my computer was acting nuts.That said, I can see it being a feature I'd acctually use in some situations.Anyway...as gaming mice go, this one has all the features, an adjustable weight and plenty of replacement feet (which I thought was a nice touch) to give you a great gaming experiance.There is only one reason to not buy this...Tiny hands!

Die 5-Tasten Maus für Rechtshändler ist hochwertig verarbeitet und reagiert präzise in allen wählbaren Auflösungen (ohne Treiber: 2000, 800 und 400 dpi). Zudem gibt es die Möglichkeit, das Gesamtgewicht durch mitgelieferte 10g und 5g Gewichte persöhnlichen Vorlieben anzupassen. Als Unterlage verwende ich zum Schutz des Schreibtisches ein stoffbezogenes Pad von OCZ. Ein zuvor berichtetes Hängenbleiben bei Stoffunterlagen kann ich nicht bestätigen. Der Abstand zur Unterlage beträgt durch die auswechselbaren Gleitpads mindestens 1mm (2 weitere Sets liegen bei).Für Spiele, die i.d.R. eine schnelle und präzise Reaktion erfordern, ist die 2000dpi-Einstellung wohl die erste Wahl. Die Umgewöhnungsphase beim Spielen bezogen auf meine alte Maus (Razor Diamondback 3G, linke Taste defekt) war mit ein paar Minuten positiv kurz.Bei Grafikanwendungen schalte ich gerne in den 800dpi Modus um, da ich hier flinke und prompte Mausreaktionen bewußt unterbinden möchte. Für Detailarbeiten bietet sich gelegendlich auch der 400dpi Modus an. Das Umschalten der Auflösung geschieht on-the-fly ohne spürbare Verzögerung mit Hilfe der drei Buttons über dem Scroll-Rad. Die aktuelle dpi Wahl wird durch ein Mini-Display auf der Maus angezeigt - nett aber unnötig.Das Scroll-Rad ist subjektiv betrachtet ein reines Vergnügen - leichtgängig, griffig und mit guter Rückmeldung. Die zwei zusätzlichen Buttons (Button 4 und 5) auf der linken Seite sind mit dem Daumen schnell und leicht bedienbar, ohne dabei die Kontrolle über den Nager zu verlieren. Ohne zusätzliche Treiber sind diese beiden Tasten mit den Browser-Funktionen VOR und ZURÜCK belegt - hilfreich.FAZITWer das gesamte Repertoire von Desktop, Bildbearbeitung/3D und Spielen abdecken möchte, trifft mit dieser Maus eine gute Entscheidung und bekommt dafür robust arbeitende Technik. Wer jedoch nur eine gute "Büro-Maus" benötigt, kann auch schon mit der guten alten Microsoft Intelli Mouse, Logitech RX250 oder Logitech B110 glücklich werden. Mein positiver Ersteindruck wurde nach einer Woche Dauernutzung noch nicht getrübt. Aus meiner Sicht hat meine alte Razor Diamondback 3G hiergegen keine Chance. Eine langfristige Beurteilung kann ich an dieser Stelle natürlich nicht bieten.

Also erstmal muß ich sagen, das die Maus wirklich klasse ist und eigentlich eine 5* Bewertung (aufgrund des Handling etc.) bekommen hätte wenn nicht diverse Probleme aufgetaucht wären.Seit dem letzten Windows update macht die Maus nämlich richtig zicken. Teilweise werden einfach rechtsklick Menüs geöffnet ohne das man die Maus anfaßt oder es werden Sachen auf dem Bildschirm markiert während man die Maus bewegt ohne einen Knopf zu drücken!?Das Problem (zumindest bei mir) ist der Treiber für die Maus. Selbst in der neusten Version kommt der Bug und ist weg sobald die Software deinstalliert wurde. Man kann die Maus zwar auch ohne die Software benutzen aber dann sind die Tasten nicht programmierbar und ich weiß nicht ob jedes Game alle Knöpfe erkennt.Nachdem ich die Maus nun komplett abgeklemmt habe ist mir außerdem aufgefallen, das meine Citrix-Anbindung (Online-Server-Anbindung) in die Firma plötzlich wieder super schnell ist. Das war die ganze Zeit eine reine "Dia-Show" und es lag wirklich nur an der Maus selbst (und nicht dem Treiber). Ich hatte das Problem schon so oft versucht zu lösen aber nie in Verbindung mit der Maus gesehen............man lernt nie aus.Also wie gesagt, es ist wirklich eine geniale Maus solange man nicht die Software Probleme bekommt die ich hatte.Deshalb nur 3*.

Mir hatte man ein OEM Produkt zugeschickt, was ich allerdings erst herausfand als die Maus nach wenigen Monaten ihren Geist aufgab.OEM-Produkte lassen sich nur 2 Wochen lang bei Amazon umtauschen, bei Microsoft gar nicht, weshalb mein Geld nun weg ist.Habe nun eine Cybor RAT3, mit der ich super zufrieden bin und die auch günstiger ist.

Meine ProGamer Tage im Shooter Bereich sind nun schon etwa 3 oder 4 Jahre vorbei und Online zocke ich bestenfalls noch ne Runde ruhiges wow, BadCompany2 oder mal hin und wieder ein Game alla WarCraft3 oder künftig StarCraft2 aber ich muss sagen das mich die SideWinder bisher noch nicht im stich gelassen hat, es gibt 3 einstellbare Geschwindigkeiten die man auf die Maus Programmieren kann und zwei Tasten an der Seite, mit denen man vor und zurück gehen kann (in Strategie Spielen kann man einzelne Einheiten die man Selektiert hat durch klicken, in RPGs kann man so teilweise autowalk aktivieren und im Browser kann man auf der Seite zurück oder vor gehen)Es gibt 2 Arten von Füßen für die Maus (ich nehme an für unterschiedliche MausPads) und Gewichte sind auch dabei, so kann man sich seinen Schwerpunkt festlegen wie man ihn will (ob es das für normal Zocker wie mich lohnt Gewichte rein zu packen ist natürlich die andere Frage)Das Kabel ist lang genug um es hinter dem Tisch entlang laufen zu lassen und bietet trotzdem genug raum zum benutzen ohne das das Kabel spannt, natürlich hat es einen USB Anschluss.Es ist jetzt vllt. nicht die beste Maus und mitlerweile gibt es ja auch schon 1 oder 2 Nachfolger dieser Maus, doch kann man hier gerne mal zu greifen wenn man eine gut in der Hand liegende und zuverlässige Maus sucht die nicht die Welt kostet.

Hallo :),die Maus kam zu mir als Ersatz für eine Copperhead. In der Regel benutze ich eine Maus häufig mehr als acht Stunden am Tag, bin jedoch kein Profispieler.Diese MS-Maus ist mit ihrer roten Beleuchtung hübsch anzuschauen. Das ist leider ( außer der guten Verarbeitung ) das einzig positive, was ich zu dem Mäuschen sagen kann.Das Ding ist von Hause aus schon so schwer, das mir nicht erklärbar ist, weshalb irgend jemand sie noch extra mit den beiliegenden Gewichten ausstatten wollen sollte.Der Stromverbrauch der Maus ist so hoch, das sie an eine aktiven Hub angeschlossen werden muß. Einfach an den Hub einer Tastatur (kurze Wege, weniger Leitungen zum PC) ist also nicht drin.Alle mitgelieferten Pads übermitteln ein klebriges Gefühl auf einer normalen, mit Hartlack lackierten Schreibtischoberfläche. Was zu deutlichen Verzögerungen im Spielgeschehen führt und insgesamt ein unbehagliches Gefühl vermittelt. Ja, ich poliere die Schreibtischoberfläche gelegentlich :).Das Mauskabel ist ebenfalls zu dick und nicht flexibel genug. Läßt man die Maus los, richtet sie sich sofort in Richtung des Kabels aus. Man muß sie also bereits immer gegen den Widerstand des Kabels bewegen.Aus meiner Sicht deshalb für den stundenlangen Spielbetrieb völlig ungeeignet und selbst im Büroalltag würde ich diese Maus nicht benutzen wollen.MfG R.Just
