beautiful story. 4 year old loves it

I LOVE Swimmy! I have bought and given many, many copies of Swimmy in the past 50 or so years. All of my children, grandchildren, great grandchildren have heard and read Swimmy. Many other children have received a gift of Swimmy from me.Swimmy is brave, focused, generous, smart and delightful. The graphics are great! All in all, a great read. It must be - look at how long it's still being published and sold! And I'm still giving it as gifts.

Like with many new books I had to convince my 2 year old to read this one and I wasn't sure if he will like the illustrations. The first time I didn't read the whole text I summarized the every page in 1-2 short sentences. Few days ago I had to read it to him word by word several times in a row. I will buy more books written by this author.

This is a beautifully illustrated story of a small fish whose family is eaten, and finds himself suddenly all alone. Despite this hard beginning, Swimmy discovers that there is great beauty in the world and when he meets new friends who are hiding in fear, he helps them discover the beautiful world too.

What a charming book! I love the simple yet beautiful pictures. I love the introduction to different sea creatures. But, most of all, I loved the message. Team Work!

Once again, Lionni gives a simple message with heavy meaning--but really only as heavy as you want it to be. My child thought the story was nice, but didn't see the depth in it that I see. He is 7, so he needed some "coaching" to find the layers of meaning. The language is colorful and simple and his art takes you past the typical, easy to identify images that are seen in children's literature.
